Introduction

The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is looking for dependable and friendly

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI)/SENIOR LIFEGUARD

to instruct patrons at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation swimming pools.

General Description

This is a non-permanent position that will work on an intermittent basis.

Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in a 12-month period.

Water Safety Instructors are responsible for the safety of patrons at District Parks and Recreation swimming pools. They assists patrons and instructs participants in swimming skills and techniques. This is a senior position. It differs from other positions in the classification series by performing tasks at a proficient, accomplished level and handling he more difficult, complex, and/or irregular tasks. Individuals in senior positions typically assist in setting priorities for work and are asked upon occasion to use judgement to solve unusual problems.

Essential Functions

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Water Safety Instructors must have knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aid, recognize hazardous situations, and adopt effective courses of action. Water Safety Instructors must also have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. This position requires mobility. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in the process of unsafe behavior. This position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Observes swimmers to ensure they adhere to swimming pool rules and maintains order

Provides swimming lessons as scheduled

Plans, develops, organizes, and instructs aquatics programs and activities

Keeps the pool area clean and clear of debris, trip hazards, or other possible injury hazards

Maintains pool equipment and ensures the proper sanitation of pool and bathhouse facilities

Meets and deals with the public in a positive and firm manner.

Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid

Receives payment for use of swimming facilities and instruction and maintains attendance of participants

Maintain attendance records of participants

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Less than High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: Under 1 year swimming instruction and lifesaving techniques experience

Special Job Requirements

At least 16 years of age

Experienced swimmer and available to work required hours and locations

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training Certification

American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction Certification

For individuals lacking certification in one of the American Red Cross areas listed above, please visit the Southern Arizona Chapter of the America Red Cross for information on registration and completing the required course work for these certifications at www.redcrossarizon.org. Please note, the Lifeguard Certification is a prerequisite for the City of Tucson Lifeguard Certification.

For individuals lacking the Water Safety Instructor Certification, the Parks and Recreation Department will provide classes dependent upon need. Register online at www.EZEEreg.com or call 520.791.4877. Trainees must be at least 16 years old before the first class.

Selection Plan

Applicants should have knowledge of contact skills, including defenses, approaches, escapes, carries without equipment, ability to turn c-spine victims in deep water, and swim to side 30' without equipment. Lifeguard screenings consist of rescue skills, swimming, first aid, and CPR in practical and oral interviews.
