EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

for our fast-paced community oriented team.

General Description

The Equipment Operator operates equipment for the set-up, tear down, and maintenance of bleachers, fixed platforms, and mobile stage for City Parks and Recreation special community events. The Equipment Operator operated larger fleet vehicles in the transportation of equipment, materials and green waste and other duties assigned to meet operational needs.

This position may occasionally require overtime and/or weekends.

Essential Functions

Transports and sets-up equipment such as bleachers, and mobile stage for community events in addition, hauls and stockpiles materials throughout the parks system.

Operates the street sweeper in Park and Recreation parking lots and park roadways, inspects and maintains said equipment. Assist with the setup of traffic control devices for events.

Maintains parking lots, park streetways, walking paths, and other duties assigned to meet operational needs.

Operates the water tanker in the use of dust control for various events, inspects and maintains said equipment.

Operates pickup, dump, crane, flatbed, and hydraulic lift trucks with flatbed, box, and hydraulic trailers to transport loads of equipment, materials, and green waste debris.  In addition, operates backhoe, power chipper, skid steer, forklift, concrete cutter, soil tamper, chain saw, pole saw and assorted power hand tools. Uses shovels, rakes, hula ho, and assorted hand tools.

Maintains daily work activity task with the use of I Phone and Cartegraph management system. Required to fill out reports, forms, and sweeper logs.

Maintain clean work areas and fleet vehicles, responds to emergencies, and performs safety checks on equipment.

Assist with the tree maintenance to include planting, removal, trimming, chipping and stump grinding of trees in the park system.

Assist with storm damage, and construction maintenance related tasks.

Occasionally direct helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees in the performance of task assigned.

Train personnel on safety regulations, proper use of tools and equipment. Occasionally and temporarily act in a higher capacity in the absence of supervision on job sight. Take annual training classes online and in person.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year of equipment operation

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B

Pursuant to A.D. 6.01-8 Commercial Driver Policy

Incumbent employees may apply for a promotional opportunity if they meet all of the position requirements except for a CDL or required CDL endorsement. An employee who does not have the required license may be conditionally selected and advised of the requirement that they obtain the required license within 90 calendar days of the conditional notification of selection. Failure to obtain the required license and endorsement within this time frame will result in the removal of the conditional selection offer.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in the following assessments:  

  • Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held: the week of March 22, 2021

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 80% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Employment List that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
