Introduction

 

 

The GIS section of Tucson Water is seeking GIS Technicians to participate in various GIS projects in support of the Water Department’s infrastructure by coordinating GIS data, and information that has specific department/division or City-wide implications. The GIS Technician is responsible for all aspects of GIS data entry and map production. GIS Technicians read and interpret source documents such as civil engineering plans, plat maps, legal descriptions, and enter required data into the GIS database.

General Description

Responsible for all aspects of GIS data entry and map production. Reads and interprets source documents such as civil engineering plans, plot maps and legal descriptions and enters required data into the GIS database.

Essential Functions

The essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Updates and maintains GIS databases using ArcGIS and other GIS related software.
  • Assists in developing and implementing GIS applications for database maintenance and map output.
  • Generates various GIS products for engineering, planning and research projects.
  • Uses GIS applications to query, analyze, display and interpret department GIS databases.
  • Performs quality control of GIS attribute and spatial data. Converts paper and cad data into a GIS format.
  • Researches, reads, and interprets water engineering construction and related documents including as-built water plans, improvement plans, legal descriptions, and County Assessor records.
  • Provides customer service by answering phone calls, responding to e-mail, investigating discrepancies, and providing information and technical advice to customers and other city departments. 
  • Maintains Water Asset web-based database to track work orders, as-built plans and legal descriptions.  

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualification: Under 1 year of experience with GIS software and micro languages, knowledge of automated mapping and GIS including ESRI's ArcGIS software, GIS relational database issues, general database concepts, theory and principles of GIS software manipulation, usage requirements and analysis of system outputs and computer system operations.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as relevant experience in  the areas listed below:

  • Proficiency in ArcGIS, MS-Windows, Naviline, WAM, Autodesk, CAD, and GIS-related computer applications
  • Experience researching and working with Construction Plans, Service Work Orders, Fire Hydrant/Fire Service Work Orders, Legal Descriptions, etc.
  • CAD experience 
  • Experience working with Tucson Water Standard Specifications and Details

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a virtual Oral Board Interview.   

  • Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held March 31, 2021 and April 1, 2021, if necessary

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your virtual oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
