To remain eligible, you must maintain your permanent or probationary Civil Service employment status through the actual date of transfer. The City of Tucson's Water Department, Tucson Water Maintenance Division is seeking a skilled mechanics to perform maintenance, repair and overhaul work on heavy construction equipment, stationary pumping and generating equipment and water system construction equipment such as hydraulic pump machines and hydraulic tools, with diesel, gasoline and natural gas engines. Work is subject to shift assignments and on-call status, which may include weekends and holidays.

General Description

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs of heavy vehicles and equipment. Rebuilds and installs engines and makes service calls.

Essential Functions

Essential duties include but are not limited to:
  • Maintains and repairs large equipment such as road/motor graders, front end loaders, backhoes, farm tractors, natural gas engines and right-angle gear drive units.  
  • Operates and inspects heavy equipment to diagnose defects, and tests repaired and overhauled equipment to insure correct operation.  
  • Disassembles equipment, examines components using precision measuring equipment, replaces worn or damaged parts, reassembles equipment and tests for correct operation. 
  • Troubleshoots problems and make repairs on 12- and 24-volt DC electrical systems such as starting systems and engine monitoring systems. 
  • Maintains records of work activity, equipment status, and corrective actions required; prepares reports; and requisitions parts and supplies utilizing a computerized maintenance management software system. 
  • Work is subject to shift assignments and on-call status, which may include weekends and holidays.
  • Successful candidates must provide their own complete set of hand tools, up to 1¼ â€œ wrenches and sockets.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: As least 4 years maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding heavy and specialized trucks, construction, and street maintenance equipment 

Valid and Unrestricted Class D -Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

At least four years professional level experience involving maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of equipment with diesel, gasoline or natural gas engines, preferably in a commercial, governmental fleet or similar environment.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a virtual Teams Oral Board interview.   

  • Virtual Teams Oral Board Interviews will be held January 27, 2021

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview
