The City of Tucson hereby announces the November 2020 Paramedic Promotional. This will establish a two-year Civil Service Promotional List. Candidates placed on the Promotional List must have at least one year of service remaining as of the date they are eligible for promotion in order to be selected from the List.
Responds to emergency medical calls by performing patient assessment, administering medical treatment and life support, loading and transporting patients to the hospital, and completing required reports and documentation, in accordance with department policy.
Performs essential incident command system functions by establishing rehab sector and medical sectors, triage, treatment, and transport. Responds to emergency fire calls and performs fire suppression duties by securing the scene, identifying and containing hazardous materials, setting up, carrying and utilizing equipment, searching for and rescuing occupants, removing obstacles, ventilating structures, salvaging contents and applying extinguishing agents to fires.
Maintains facilities and equipment by cleaning the station house interior, inspecting and maintaining vehicles and equipment, and maintaining and inventorying medical supplies.
Continues education by participating in drills and classes, teaching life support skills, meeting re-certification requirements and maintaining physical fitness.
Performs related duties by performing fire code violation building inspections, inspecting hydrants, providing information to the public, installing smoke detectors, conducting station tours, visiting schools, and complying with all procedures as outlined in department manuals and by management.
Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years as Fire Fighter as of November 30, 2020
Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License
Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification
Arizona Fire Fighter I and II Certification
TFD Paramedic Certification
Arizona Department of Health Services Paramedic Certification
HazMat First Responder Certification
The evaluative components of this promotional process will be used to assess candidate knowledge and skills in the areas of Job Knowledge, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Oral Communication, and Interpersonal Skills.
Candidates are responsible for blocking their calendars and making appropriate arrangements to ensure their availability during the dates listed below:
Oral Board Interview
Candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to the oral board interview. Panel Interview will take place on December 8, 2020. Venue is to be determined.
The interview will consist of job related questions to measure general paramedic and patient assessment knowledge.
Candidates without a formal degree will receive one point for every credit successfully completed at an accredited University, College, or Junior College, as shown on the institutions transcript, up to a maximum of 60 points. Candidates with an Associate's degree or greater will receive 70 points. Official/unofficial transcripts, or copies of transcripts, will be accepted as verification of education. Education will be limited to a maximum of 70 points.
All applicants are responsible for submitting online the educational documents no later than 11:59PM on the closing date in order to receive credit and the points associated with their education. Applicants having trouble uploading their documents, please contact Fire-HR immediately prior to the closing date. Applicants who fail to submit such documents by 11:59PM on the closing date will receive zero points for their education. No exceptions will be made.

Based upon total months of continuous commissioned service with the Tucson Fire Department; computed from the academy start date. Seniority will be limited to 60 months calculated through the closing date.
Evaluation components of this promotional exam will be scored in the following manner:
Oral Board Interview: All raw scores will be standardized within the candidate pool completing this evaluation and will account for 90% of the final score for those placed on the promotional list.
Education: All raw scores will be standardized within the candidate pool completing this evaluation and will account for 5% of the final score for those placed on the promotional list.
Seniority: All raw scores will be standardized within the candidate pool completing this evaluation and will account for 5% of the final score for those placed on the promotional list.
Candidates will participate in the entire testing process. Scores will not be released until the promotional list is established.
METHOD OF CERTIFICATION
Candidates will be ranked on the Civil Service Promotional List based on scores achieved throughout this promotional examination. Only top scoring candidates will be placed on the Paramedic Promotional List. Final scores shall be based upon the completion and achieving a passing score of 70% or better on all components of the process and be computed in accordance with the weights and procedures outlined in this job posting, and statistical techniques and procedures established by the HR Director. In the event a tie exists, "seniority in rank" is used first and then "seniority on the department," if needed, and will be the tie breaking mechanism.
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for this position and submit a proper and complete online application will receive a formal email invitation on December 4 to participate the oral board interview.
The final Promotional List will be compiled by Fire-HR no later than 1700 on December 18, 2020.

The departmental final selection interview shall either offer all candidates on the certified list the opportunity for interview, or interview candidates in the order in which they appear on the certified list until a suitable candidate is identified through the final interview process. Scores will not be released until the promotional list is established. Only those candidates that are placed on the list will be provided their scores.
The City reserves the right to change the examination dates if required for operational necessity; any changes will be communicated as soon as practical.

Candidates are advised that upon placement on a hiring promotional list, any employee having been the subject of formal discipline, as defined by Administrative Directive 2.02-16, may not be promoted until one year has passed based from the date of discovery of the incident resulting in discipline. The Fire Chief is the final authority on all promotions and reserves the right to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the formal discipline to include the nature of the infraction(s) resulting in the issuance of the discipline, the date of the infraction, the employee's personnel history since the date of the infraction, and the overall impact on the department that would be the result of the promotion of the individual.
