Introduction

The City of Tucson Information Technology Department (ITD) provides support for all departments within the City organization spanning several lines of business including citizen services, public safety, public works, and back-office business applications.  The diversity of business functions and supporting technologies makes for a dynamic work environment that is both challenging and rewarding.

The ITD is looking for a dynamic team-player with strong technical and communication skills to help advance the role of technology in the City as a Systems Administrator. Systems Administrators install, administer, troubleshoot, and maintain local area network servers; local area network server operating systems; SAN storage; the City's enterprise e-mail application; Active Directory; VMWare and various types of hardware. The successful candidate will be responsible for resolving problems, setting policies, systems security, systems planning, systems monitoring and documentation.  The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, be an excellent communicator, have direct experience supporting and maintaining enterprise systems, and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders.

This position requires advanced systems support, analytical, and documentation skills to support the business needs of the organization. Systems Administrators frequently interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

The Information Technology Department is a 24/7 operation. The successful candidate will be required to serve in an on-call status to respond to requests and emergencies occurring after normal business hours. 

General Description

The System Administrator administers, installs, troubleshoots, and maintains servers, storage, server operating systems, and the City's enterprise e-mail application and hardware. Provides assistance in resolving problems, setting policies, administrative procedures, systems monitoring, and systems documentation. 

Essential Functions

Monitors the operation of the City's server infrastructure, hardware, and operating systems, both on and off-premises.

Provides technical support to other team members within the IT Department

Responsible for the maintenance, configuration, and reliable operation of server hardware, operating systems, and virtualization.

Evaluates vendor products for Local Area Network hardware and software and makes recommendations for purchases that are consistent with short and long term Information Technology and City strategy.

Establishes Local Area Network policies, standards, and procedures and ensures adherence to City system security procedures.

Maintains backup procedures, Local Area Network data integrity, and Local Area Network disaster recovery procedures.

Administers the City's enterprise e-mail application, Office 365, its on-going maintenance, user e-mail problem resolution and associated hardware, gateways, and software

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 3 years local area network administration

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and their responses to their supplemental questions. The most qualified applicants will then be invited to participate in the following assessments:

  • Phone Screen will be held on October 8, 2020
  • Virtual Oral Boards will be held October 15, 2020

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 10% of your rating for your resume
  • 80% of your rating for your panel board interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months. Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must present your documentation at the time of your interview.  The DD 214 must be a copy that indicates characterization of service.

This position includes support of Public Safety related systems therefore, the successful candidate will be required to pass an extensive criminal background check conducted by the Tucson Police Department. Fingerprinting and reference checks may also be conducted prior to an offer of employment. Employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing any of the above requirements. A valid Arizona Driver's license is also a requirement while holding this position.
