The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is seeking to hire a talented professional who has demonstrated leadership, oversight and teamwork credentials in all aspects of recreation programming, facility operations and contributes to the adherence of standards in the Nationally Accredited Parks and Recreation Department.

The successful candidate shall demonstrate the ability to work with staff, contractors, and community partners in a variety of disciplines, and provide outstanding customer service to the public.

General Description

The Recreation Supervisor supervises recreation program personnel, and oversees the management of facilities that provide social services and recreational programs to children and adults.Develops, implements, and evaluates recreation and neighborhood center programs, activities, and special events.

Essential Functions

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises and coordinates the equivalent of two or more fulltime employees and all assigned work in a unit ensuring timely and quality activities to respond to the needs of the City, community, department, and unit.
  • Assists with the implementation, evaluation and interpretation of department policies, projects and procedures.
  • Manages, coordinates, and determines priorities of work load, monitoring levels of resources, establishing time lines, assigning work, monitoring progress, recommending changes and suggestions, writing, reviewing and editing reports prepared by staff, and approving completed projects and reports.
  • Implements controls for appropriate unit staffing and effectiveness by participating in the recruitment and hiring of employees, making recommendations on employee discipline, and other human resources issues, evaluating and managing employee performance, discussing and identifying personnel issues and facilitating resolutions, promoting positive morale in the unit, ensuring staff is trained appropriately for maximum performance, and providing leadership and guidance.
  • Contributes to the needs of the community and City by implementing and causing others to implement the organization's values and strategies by leading through example, competency, and accountabilities.
  • Provides customer service by responding to information requests, conducting research, providing solutions to problems, and correcting errors.
  • Ensures that unit work conforms to local, state, and federal governmental regulations, and other applicable rules and requirements.
  • Supervises and manages and oversees recreation programs by researching trends, researching alternate sources of financing such as grants, consulting with individuals and agencies to determine the effectiveness of programs, conducting needs assessments, developing methods and procedures to increase program participation and efficiency, recommending equipment needs, planning and monitoring budgets, promoting and scheduling overall programs, developing manuals and participating in program activities.
  • Performs public relations duties by greeting the public, providing counseling and referrals to clients, addressing concerns, assisting with the preparation of paperwork, securing assistance from service providers, attending and conducting community meetings, providing information, promoting programs, developing marketing strategies, producing publications and public service announcements to promote events, representing the department at various events and establishing and maintaining relationships.
  • Ensures the safety of vehicles, facility sites and equipment by conducting inspections of buildings and grounds, reporting maintenance problems, arranging for the replacement or repair of equipment, implementing safety requirements, planning for remodeling and managing construction projects, monitoring security, and scheduling facility use for optimum public utilization.
  • Performs administrative duties by preparing and monitoring budgets, preparing reports, correspondence, budget requests, and other documents, preparing calendars and schedules, processing payroll, monitoring service provider contracts, preparing timesheets and packets, completing requisitions, writing memos, approving expenditures, ordering and maintaining records.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 5 years experience in developing and implementing recreation or neighborhood center programs, activities and special events

Special Job Requirements

Must be obtained within 60 days of contingent job offer:

  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification
  • First Aid Certification

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualification as well as relevant experience listed below:

  • At least one year of supervisory experience

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held: the week of December 16, 2019

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List.  An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 80% of your oral board interview
