Introduction

The Public Defenders Office is seeking to hire Legal Municipal Interns to assist with misdemeanor offenses in City Court. This is a non-permanent position. It is designed and intended to provide entry level work experience for students who meet the minimum qualifications. This position will have a work schedule of approximately 15-20 hours per week; scheduling is flexible and may be tailored to class schedules or other activities. No benefits are offered with this position and non-permanent employees may not work more than 1,300 hours in a 12 month period.

General Description

Provides administrative assistance, legal research and writing support to attorneys in the City Public Defender's Office with the purpose of gaining knowledge in criminal law and criminal defense.  

Essential Functions

Drafts responses to motions by reading motions, searching for similar responses and case laws, making changes, and contacting the police department, attorneys and other agencies. 

Draft appeals and responses by reading documents, researching files, books, computer, and making phone calls.

May perform related duties by interviewing clients and witnesses, providing translation or interpretation and making field investigations and/or taking photographs.

Drafts legal memorandum and maintains records by retrieving pertinent records for cases and checking for accuracy.

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: No Experience

Special Job Requirements

Successful completion of second year law school, legal research and writing class and evidence class.
Must have a letter of recommendation from an instructor at the educational institute in which they are currently enrolled.
Must have a current cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (Student may submit copy of last grade report with cumulative GPA)
