The City of Tucson is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic leader who is interested in helping to establish Tucson as the destination for sustainable living, growth, and opportunities. Successful candidate(s) will be enthusiastically engaged in learning about the City of Tucson and contributing to the City’s commitment to its residents and long-term strategic goals. This position is housed within the City Manager’s Office.

General Description

The successful candidate(s) will work for the City Manager’s Office in the dynamic environment it takes to manage a large public agency. The City Manager’s Office oversees activities and initiatives with interdepartmental and city-wide influence. This position will provide support to an office or initiative City staff are engaged with. The successful candidate(s) will be assigned a project directly related to ongoing developments at the City. These projects include, but are not limited to: 

  • Smart Cities Strategic Planning
  • Chart of Accounts Stakeholder Engagement
  • Capital Improvement Project Coordination
  • Equity and Engagement Planning
  • Training and Workforce Development
  • Internship Program Sustainability
  • Central Volunteer Resource Development
  • Innovation Initiatives Project Management
  • Sustainability and Climate Change Intern

Essential Functions

Over the course of the internship, the Management Intern will be expected to gain experience and support the city through some of the following functions as determined by the Intern’s chosen project and their supervisor:

  • Assists with administrative projects as required or directed to include work with outside agencies, department divisions, and City Departments to optimize project delivery.
  • Researches, analyzes, and summarizes existing programs by providing written summaries and detailed reports on assigned tasks.
  • Assists with the implementation, evaluation, and interpretation of department policies, projects and procedures.
  • Provides support to the relevant team in the implementation of the selected project.
  • Contributes to the needs of the community and City by implementing and causing others to implement the organization's values and strategies by leading through example, competency, and accountabilities.
  • Provides exceptional customer service by responding to information requests, conducting research, providing solutions to problems, and correcting errors.
  • Communicates project developments and deliverables effectively to a wide range of stakeholders across City Departments and leadership.
  • Works independently, with little direction; can change direction and priorities quickly; and is flexible and adaptable.
  • Provides administrative support by developing goals and strategies, writing memos and correspondence, developing forms, maintaining databases and records, evaluating websites, holding meetings, tracking invoices, producing reports, developing policies and procedures, assisting with presentations, developing and assisting with meetings, and explaining equipment usage.
  • Uses Microsoft Office products with proficiency such as: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level and Type: Current enrollment in, or recent graduate of, a Master’s program in Public Administration, Education, Human Resources, Planning, Political Science, or similar field.

Preferred Experience Qualifications: Previous work or volunteer experience with a civic or non-profit organization with a focus on community engagement, planning, budgeting, finance, or project management.

Creditable service does not accrue during any reemployment period.
