The Planning and Engineering Division of the Tucson Water Department is seeking multiple, qualified, and motivated Senior Engineering Technicians (SET) to join the Plant Design and Distribution Design Sections of the Utility.

The Plant Design position is primarily engaged in computer-aided drafting layout and drafting support for Civil Engineers and Engineering Associates. The Distribution Design position involves a combination of project database maintenance, utility research and coordination, and use of computer-aided drafting software.

General Description

Tucson Water Senior Engineering Technicians are senior positions with design experience that include proficiency in creating and working with grading, drainage, water, sewer, utilities and roadway plans. Autodesk AutoCAD Civil3D is the primary software utilized for creation and revisions of the engineering plans.

Senior Engineering Technicians conduct research, interpret engineering plans, survey records and other documents, and provide information to the public and staff personnel.  

Essential Functions

Tucson Water SET's are responsible for the following:

  • Transform initial sketches and rough product designs into working documents using AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil 3D.
  • Complete design work using AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, and other design/drafting software.
  • Perform design efforts in conventional aspects of civil engineering, which include research and analysis, hydraulics, hydrology, water/sewer/drainage.
  • Develop and review preliminary layouts, concepts, and designs for new and existing distribution mains and water production facilities to ensure adherence to established specifications and standards.
  • Must be able to take initiative and be self-motivated to work on individual tasks and in a team environment. Prepare construction documents under the direction of a Project Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Coordination of CAD files and design with internal and external team members.
  • Coordinate and organize project documentation.
  • Participate in monthly meetings or weekly project meetings.
  • Ensure all work is completed in conformance with company standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to generate drawings using appropriate workspace, borders, menus, and drafting tools from sketches provided by others or similar project documents.
  • Research and obtain standards/codes required by client, town, county, etc. through interaction with engineers to accurately develop plans.
  • Revise drawings to incorporate red-marked revisions or verbal instruction; request and receive data from involved parties and input into project database or spreadsheet, as appropriate.
  • Organize/maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in the appropriate project server directory locations; review database for completeness and obtain missing data.
  • Perform Field Design, Construction and Field As-Built Reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years computer-aided drafting, geographic information systems, or in collecting, analyzing or processing field samples and data

Valid and Unrestricted D - Driver's License

An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the ability to successfully perform the essential functions may be considered

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidates will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as have relevant experience in the areas of:

  • At least 3 years of progressive work experience using Autodesk Civil 3D
  • Experience utilizing Autodesk Civil3D for preparation of engineering drawings for water main replacement projects and water production facilities
  • Experience utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D for importing survey points to develop new and existing water main replacement projects and water production facilities
  • Desired design experience includes proficiency in creating and working with surface tins and 3D surfaces along with grading, drainage, water, sewer and roadway plans

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a Hands-On AutoCAD practical examination.   

  • AutoCAD practical examination will be held: July 8-10, 2019  

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 100% of your rating for the practical examination 

Selection interviews may be conducted post-list by each hiring manager. This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies at Tucson Water occurring within the next 6 months.
