Introduction

The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an energetic, bright, and charismatic individual to join our Recreation Team.

The ideal Recreation Assistant is a highly motivated individual who is committed to providing outstanding customer service and assisting in recreational activities, programs, and services to the patrons of the Parks and Recreation facilities.

General Description

A Recreation Assistant assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of recreation programs for children, youth, and adults. Assists with the operation of facilities and provides service to the public.

Essential Functions

Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.

Assists with the development and implementation of programs by conducting research, planning and scheduling activities, updating and preparing course materials, and maintaining displays.

Coordinates helpers and volunteers, contacts outside agencies to plan programs or to request donations, monitors budgets, sets up rooms for classes, cleans rooms, checks equipment in and out, and teaches.

Assists with the operation of facilities by opening, closing and inspecting facilities, reporting equipment repair needs, safety hazards and criminal activities, and taking the lead in emergency situations.

Provides public relations and customer service by answering telephone inquiries, providing information, processing memberships, providing assistance with equipment, making presentations, attending seminars and meetings, discussing issues with parents, resolving problems, and promoting programs.

Keeps attendance, orders supplies, creates promotional materials, prepares various reports, processes paperwork, maintains files, prepares evaluations, entering information into the computer, receives fees, reconciles accounts, prepares deposits, and processing refunds, and provides transportation to participants.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year of developing and implementing recreation programs

 

An equivalent combination of education and relevant-level experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position may be considered with the exception of certification requirements.

Special Job Requirements

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, First Aid required within first 60 days of employment

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in a customer service environment

Valid and unrestricted Arizona Driver's License

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board Interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held: the Week of April 14, 2019

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 80% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must present your documentation at the Oral Board interviews.  The DD 214 must be a copy that indicates characterization of service.
