Introduction

 

This is a non-permanent position that will work on an intermittent basis. Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Other than Earned Paid Sick Time, non-permanent appointees do not receive benefits and their appointment may be terminated at any time without notice or right of appeal.

 

The City of Tucson is looking for responsible individuals who enjoy swimming and working outdoors. The Parks and Recreation Department will be hiring over 150 lifeguards and swimming instructors for exciting summer work at one of the City of Tucson's pools beginning the week of May 27, 2018.

General Description

Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of patrons at the Parks and Recreation Department's swimming pools. A Lifeguard's major responsibility is to observe swimmers and enforce regulations in the guarding of life and the prevention of accidents at the Department's swimming pools.

Essential Functions

Required Skills

 A Lifeguard must have knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aid, recognize hazardous situations, and adopt effective courses of action. The Lifeguard must also have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behaviors. The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques.

Essential Functions

  • Rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning.
  • Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid.
  • Observes swimmers to ensure they adhere to swimming pool rules and maintains order.
  • Keeps the pool area clean and clear of debris, trip hazards, or other possible injury hazards.
  • Maintains pool equipment and ensures the proper sanitation of pool and bathhouse facilities.
  • Meets and deals with the public in a positive and firm manner.
  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or hazards.
  • Notifies supervisor of any accidents, rescues, or problems that arise.
  • Reports any equipment that is in need of repair.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications: No experience

Special Job Requirements

  • At least 15 years of age by May 27, 2018
  • Experienced swimmer and available to work required hours/locations
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification
  • American Red Cross First Aid Basics Certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification

For individuals that lack certification in one of the American Red Cross areas listed above (CPR or First Aid Basics),  please visit the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross for information on registering and completing the required course work for these certifications www.redcrossarizona.org. Please note, both of these certifications are prerequisites for the City of Tucson Lifeguard Certification.

For individuals that lack Lifeguard Certification, the Parks and Recreation Department will provide weeknight classes starting on Feb 26 - March 22, 2018 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm and weekend classes starting April 7, 2018  from 8:00 am to noon.

 

WEEKDAY CLASSES:

Feb 26-March 22 from 7-10 pm

Clements and Sunnyside Pools - Mon./Wed./Thurs.

WEEKEND CLASSES:

April 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29  from 8:00 am-noon, plus one afternoon class TBA.

Held at Archer, Clements, Udall, and Sunnyside Pools

Selection Plan

Applicants must attend one of the City's lifeguard screening sessions.  The earlier you complete these requirements, the sooner your application will receive consideration. Your certificates must be current in order for you to participate in one of the screenings. Bring all certifications to screening, including WSI if applicable. Also bring with you your swimsuit and towel.

All Lifeguard screenings will be held at Catalina High School Pool, 2005 N. Dodge Blvd., 520-791-4245

 Applicant should have knowledge of contact skills, including defenses, approaches, escapes, carries without equipment, ability to turn c-spine victims in deep water and swim to side 30' without equipment.  Screening consists of rescue skills, swimming, first aid and CPR in practical and oral interviews.

Screening Dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday, December 28, 2017 at 3 pm
  • Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 9 am
  • Saturday April 7, 2018 at 9 am
  • Saturday May 5, 2018 at 9 am

OPTIONAL:

Training Classes will be offered for individuals interested in moving to an instructor position. The Spring Water Safety Instructor Class is scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday, 7-10 pm beginning March 26 through April 19, 2018 at Catalina Pool.  Trainee must be at least 16 years old before the first class.
