Introduction

Department of Transportation is seeking highly qualified, dedicated, dependable, motivated and customer-oriented professionals to join their Engineering Team.  The Construction Inspector provides construction surveillance of public works projects for compliance with applicable engineering codes and standards.  This position receives direction from the Lead Inspector and consults the engineer for design changes or approval to do extra work.

To remain eligible, you must maintain your permanent or probationary Civil Service employment status through the actual date of transfer. If you are not a current permanent or probationary Civil Service employee at the date of transfer, you will not be eligible for this position. Non-permanent or appointed employees are not eligible.

General Description

Coordinates inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with contracts, standards, and specifications. Creates and maintains documentation of site findings.

Essential Functions

Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.

Conducts job site inspections by making daily visits to active construction projects, reviewing progress, measuring and calculating for contract items, monitoring activities, enforcing codes and processes, and investigating complaints.

Supervises sites by planning, organizing, and overseeing inspection activities, coordinating with contractors and inspectors, and ensuring conformance with contract specifications.

Interprets engineering documents, compiles reports and documentation, reviews pay estimates, and provides monthly estimates to contractors.

Closes projects by coordinating final work site inspection, providing a list of items that need completing, generating final quantities and pay estimates, and completing final documentation.

Overseeing system connections and conducts tests.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: 4 years and over inspecting construction projects for compliance with applicable  engineering codes and standards

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License 

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the Minimum Qualifications, the ideal candidate will have

  • ACI Field Testing Technician Certification
  • ATTI Field Technician Certification
  • Experience and working knowledge of Microsoft Word
  • Experience and working knowledge of Microsoft Excell

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held the week of June 25, 2018

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List.  An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview

The list may be used by any City department with an approved vacancy to fill in the next 6 months. Selection will be made in accordance with CSR III, Section 2. Conclusion

This position requires a satisfactory Criminal Background Check and Motor Vehicle History Report.  Reference checks may also be conducted prior to an offer of employment.  Employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing any of the above requirements.

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
