Uses independent judgment for the following:
Schedules, supervises, and evaluates vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks performed by two or more full-time employees working on an assigned shift. Establishes priorities, controls workflow, performs quality control inspections, and evaluates equipment performance.
Coordinates work performed on statutory inspections, facilitates safety meetings and other safety related activities. Ensures employees are trained to safely perform required tasks for maximum production. Checks work areas for cleanliness, and responds to safety concerns and vehicle recalls.
Schedules and coordinates preventive maintenance inspections and repairs. Evaluates emissions tests, oil analysis, annual ladder inspections, and annual pump tests test results.
Participates in the recruitment and hiring of department employees; makes recommendations on employee discipline and other human resources issues; promotes positive morale in the department by providing leadership and guidance. Evaluates employee performance and administers performance evaluations.
Assists with the implementation and interpretation of established department policies, projects and procedures. Communicates with subordinate-level employees, management, co- workers, vendors, contractors, and other personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Instructs and trains employees by explaining tasks clearly and assisting them in solving and diagnosing difficult repair problems. Ensures work performed conforms to local, state, and federal government regulations rules and regulations and industry standards for emergency response vehicles.
Prepares written documents such as performance evaluations, PM reports, and various fleet reports using Microsoft Word and Excel products. Opens and closes work orders in Asset WORKS or equivalent electronic fleet management program. Performs service writing duties and assigns work to technicians.
Achieves and maintains EVT and ASE certifications as a condition of this classification.
Lifts equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 4 years experience maintaining, repairing, and modifying heavy equipment, emergency response vehicles, or class 8 highway trucks.

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
