Manages day-to-day activities and develops plans addressing future strategic needs of the assigned division within the Fire Department. A division is a subordinate element of a bureau within the Fire Department.
Directs operational activities of assigned division by planning, directing, and delegating activities in support of the department’s strategic plan and organizational directives.
Provides leadership, training and mentoring to subordinate employees through the development/evaluation of training programs and coordination employee performance evaluations.
Interprets, formulates, recommends, and implements policies, procedures, and program in an assigned area. Collects and analyses data metrics to evaluate program performance.
Directs the preparation and administration of the division's budget, providing overall fiscal management of the budget for each section within the division. Interprets and analyzes data for budget projections.
Oversees personnel actions such as transfers, promotions, disciplinary actions, recommended disciplinary actions and commendations.
Acts in the Assistant Chief’s absence by attending meetings, making decisions, and providing department leadership.
Ensures that department operations conform with local, state, and federal governmental regulations, worker safety and other applicable rules and requirements.
Represents the department at various meetings and public appearances before citizen groups, volunteers, career, political constituents, and the news media. Investigates and responds to citizen complaints and inquiries.
Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering, public administration, business administration, or a related field.
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 10 years’ experience with a “qualifying department*, at least 8 of which are commissioned Tucson Fire experience or at the rank of Fire Battalion Chief or equivalent in a “qualifying department*.
*Qualifying department = a municipal fire department serving a population of at least 350,000 residents

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
