FIRE PREVENTION INSPECTOR ASSIGNMENT: HAZMAT (#6413)

General Description

Directs and conducts comprehensive fire prevention inspections of new construction and existing buildings for code compliance and in response to safety complaints. Investigates origins and causes of fires.

Essential Functions

This is an assignment classification derived from 6412 (Fire Prevention Inspector) and includes the following essential functions: Responds to hazardous materials calls and identifies the materials, isolates the incident and evacuates the individuals not in the "hot zone"; goes into "hot zone" to mitigate problems; identifies containers involved and identifies or classifies unknown materials and determines the concentration of hazardous materials.

Identifies and predicts likely behavior of materials and containers, estimates the likely size, shape, and concentrations associated with the release of materials using computer modeling, monitoring equipment, or specialists in this field. Develops objectives and defensive, offensive, nonintervention action options for each hazardous materials incident. Uses safety considerations consistent with the local emergency response plan and the organization's standard operating procedures.

Determines the emergency response equipment and personal protective equipment for action required to implement HazMat procedures.

Participates in the debriefing of each incident; may serve as part of the Tucson Police and Tucson Fire Rapid Response Team to evaluate suspicious or unknown packages.

On 8 hour assignment call.

Inputs Tier Two reports from companies in Tucson that handle hazardous materials equipment.

Performs special rescue activities involving rope rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse rescue, or swift water rescue.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 18 months Fire Fighter

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation Certification

Emergency Medical Technician Basic Certification (AZDHS and NREMT)

HazMat First Responder Certification

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
