Protects life and property through emergency incident intervention. Performs fire suppression and fire prevention duties, and provides basic life support emergency medical service. Conducts community service activities including community education and pre-plan inspections. Ensures readiness through facility, apparatus, equipment, and personal maintenance.

This is an assignment classification derived from 6401 (Fire Fighter) and includes the following essential functions: Performs fire suppression and emergency response by securing the scene, identifying and containing hazardous materials, setting up and carrying equipment, removing obstacles, utilizing tools and equipment to extinguish fires, rescuing occupants, administering medical treatment, and transporting patients to the hospital.

Performs facility, apparatus, and equipment maintenance by performing daily station cleaning and grounds maintenance, and routinely maintaining and inspecting emergency service equipment.

Educates the community and personnel by conducting station tours, participating in community events and programs, teaching safety classes, and providing the appropriate level of information.

Conducts fire inspections, targets hazards, and inspects and tests hydrants and fire protection systems.

Performs related duties by maintaining physical fitness and all required certifications, attending training and conditioning classes, participating in drills, and complying with all procedures as outlined in department manuals and by management

Responds to hazardous materials calls and identifies the materials, isolates the incident and evacuates the individuals not in the "hot zone"; goes into "hot zone" to mitigate problems; identifies containers involved and identifies or classifies unknown materials and determines the concentration of hazardous materials.

Identifies and predicts likely behavior of materials and containers, estimates the likely size, shape, and concentrations associated with the release of materials using computer modeling, monitoring equipment, or specialists in this field.

Develops objectives and defensive, offensive, or nonintervention action options for each hazardous materials incident. Uses safety considerations consistent with the local emergency response plan and the organization's standard operating procedures. Determines the emergency response equipment and personal protective equipment for action required to implement HazMat procedures.  

Participates in the debriefing of each incident; may serve as part of the Tucson Police and Tucson Fire Rapid Response Team to evaluate suspicious or unknown packages. Inputs Tier Two reports from companies in Tucson that handle hazardous materials equipment. Performs special rescue activities involving rope rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse rescue, or swift water rescue.

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years commissioned service with Tucson Fire Department within the past 5 years.

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
