General Description

Performs crime investigation and analyzes evidence to determine the cause and source of crimes. Manages case loads, provides assistance to the public, prescreens police and civilian job applicants.

Essential Functions

Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.

Investigates crimes by responding to calls, conducting surveillance, obtaining warrants, interviewing witnesses and suspects, collecting and analyzing evidence, drawing diagrams of the crime scene, conducting research, making arrests, and showing lineups.

Provides assistance to the public and law enforcement agencies by responding to telephone calls and correspondence, discussing cases and other issues with citizens, and providing statistics and general information to law enforcement agencies.

Manages caseloads by preparing and maintaining files, processing paperwork, writing reports, and processing evidence.

Prescreens police and civilian applicants by reviewing their paperwork, conducting interviews, conducting background investigations and polygraph examinations, and providing assistance to personnel as needed. Performs related duties by testifying in court, training employees, maintaining vehicle, and providing security for special events.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 3 years serving as Police Officer

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver

Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification (AZ POST Certified)

Arizona Criminal Justice Information System Network Terminal Operator Certification

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
