General Description

Operates, monitors, and controls water treatment facilities, distribution systems, and related equipment. Makes necessary adjustments to ensure appropriate water supply, quality and pressure, and to maintain the integrity of the water system.

Essential Functions

Monitors and controls potable and/or reclaimed SCADA operations remotely from a control room; monitors treatment plants recharge basins and distribution systems; makes repairs and operational decisions; cleans plant areas.

Responds to alarms and emergencies; performs facility checks for any unusual operations; operates, monitors, and controls various equipment associated with production, distribution, potable and non-potable water systems from a control room and locally; dispatches maintenance personnel.

Monitors and operates various facilities by reading and adjusting levels, calculating rates, opening and closing gates and valves, operating and controlling pumps, recording meter readings and analyzing, adjusting plant flow requirements, and adjusting chemical feed systems.

Schedules and tracks personnel, generates reports, extracts data from reports, stores and archives data, creates hard copies of data, handles customer complaints and maintains logbooks.

Collects and analyzes data by collecting samples for analysis, reading meters and monitors, writing forms, performing lab analyses on samples for various parameters, determining when or if process changes are necessary and calibrating lab instruments and chemical pumps.

Coordinates activities with appropriate agencies during emergencies affecting the water system such as fires or power outages.

Receives customer telephone calls regarding water system problems and water quality concerns and responds with appropriate action. Prepares written reports and responds to claims.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years operating water treatment facilities and distribution systems

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Water Treatment Plant Grade 2 Certification or equivalent state certification

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Water Distribution Grade 2 Certification or equivalent state certification

Valid and Unrestricted D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

ADEQ Grade 3 certification in Water Treatment AND ADEQ Grade 3 certification in Water Distribution are required within 12 months of hire. Failure to obtain both certifications will result in failure of probation and employment will be terminated effective immediately.

Applicants with water certifications from other states will be accepted only if the certification is eligible for reciprocity. However, applicants are required to check with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) regarding reciprocity eligibility/requirements.

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
