Checks meter operations; notifies customers of unusual or excessive consumption; data logs A.M.R. meters; notifies customers of malfunctioning meter and AMR/AMI devices or service lines and suggested means of correction
Reads and interrogate residential and commercial meters on varying assigned routes using hand-held and mobile computers. Use hand-held equipment to read meters when AMR/AMI reads cannot be obtained. Follows procedures regarding abnormal consumption; Documents read problems and other issues. Locates meter services; verifies service information and meter and AMR/AMI device serial numbers to ensure proper identification and billing information for customer accounts
Installs new meter and AMR/AMI devices; installs fire hydrant meters and backflows; interrogates, documents, and removes/replaces defective or damaged meters and AMR/AMI devices; cleans out meter boxes; resets and replaces meter boxes
Conducts field investigations of reported leaks, broken meters, low/high pressure, and water complaints. Checks for inoperable ball valves/curb stops and meters running backward, tests pressure and flow on-site, checks the availability of water at all areas of the property and neighboring properties, inspects and corrects new meter sets for Contractor Compliance Program
Performs activation and deactivation of water service; locks and unlocks meters with appropriate locking devices on unpaid or delinquent accounts, sometimes under considerable time constraints; investigates cases of possible tampering and unauthorized water use
Completes start-up processes for meter reading and communications software on mobile devices; troubleshoots and works to resolve mobile computer and communications device problems in the field; operates mobile work order system; creates and closes work orders. Keep accurate records in conformance with department procedures
Operates a vehicle and a variety of tools and equipment required for work and in the installation, removal, maintenance, and repair of water meters, sometimes in difficult, hard-to-reach or hazardous areas
Maintains motor vehicles by ensuring equipment and supplies necessary to complete assigned tasks; inspects and performs daily operator-level maintenance, checks, and service on assigned vehicles; requisitions necessary tools, equipment, and supplies required for assigned work orders
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Skill in meter services rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures, including water conservation and identifying sources of high water use
Skill in meter equipment used by the City
Skill in basic mathematics with a focus on water flow and metering
Skill in safe work methods and safety regulations while performing maintenance work
Skill in recordkeeping practices of work performed
Skill in computer applications related to the work with a focus on meter reading, charts & graphs, and word documents
Skill in techniques for dealing with individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds

Ability to identify and resolve operational, technical, and procedural problems and communicate problems effectively
Ability in preparing clear and concise written reports

Ability in reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, and troubleshooting metering equipment.

To follow traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation
Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D
Minimum Experience: At least one (1) year reading, servicing, and performing turn-on/turn-off of utility meters
Education & Experience Equivalency: A combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities that demonstrate the ability to perform the functions of the position may be considered.
