THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SPECIALIST (#3328)

General Description

Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreation programs for children, youth, and adults with disabilities. Assist with the operation of facilities and provides service to the public. Implements therapeutic recreation programs and/or recreation-based activities that meet participants' needs and interests for leisure and increased independence.

 This job reports to: Therapeutic Recreation Program Coordinator.

Essential Functions

Oversees therapeutic activities for persons with disabilities by planning and implementing specialized programs and classes to meet the individualized needs of the participants.

Assesses and adapts programs based on evaluation of participant’s physical, cognitive, social abilities, and limitations in a specialized, inclusive, or aquatic setting.   

Participates in establishing goals and objectives based on participant’s strengths and challenges including implementation of behavior management techniques.   

Evaluates programs outcomes and make necessary changes to ensure participant’s success.   

Understands participant's diagnosis and the relationship to therapeutic recreation intervention. 

Establishes and maintains interpersonal strategies approaches and strategies to inspire, stimulate, and encourage ongoing client and family involvement in the program. 

Plans and implements therapeutic recreation programs with minimal supervision and adapts to various work settings.  

Demonstrates ethical, professional, and risk management behavior related to trust, confidentiality, and safety of participants families & co-workers. 

Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.   

Coordinates senior rec workers and volunteers, contracts outside agencies to plan programs. Requests donations, monitors budget, sets up room for classes, cleans rooms, and teaches.   

Assists with the operation of facilities by opening, closing, and inspecting facilities, reporting equipment repair needs, safety hazards and criminal activities, and taking the lead in emergency situations.   

Provides public relations and customer service by answering telephone inquiries, providing information, processing membership, providing assistance with equipment, making presentations, attending seminars and meetings, discussing issues with parents, resolving problems, and promoting programs.   

Keeps attendance, orders supplies, creates promotional materials, prepares various reports, processes paperwork, maintains files, prepares evaluations, data entry, receives fees, reconciles accounts, prepares deposits, and processing refunds, and provides transportation to participants.
  

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Parks & Recreation, or related field.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year full time experience planning and conducting recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.  

Valid and Unrestricted D - Driver

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
