General Description

Ensures the safety of patrons at City Parks and Recreation swimming pools, trains aquatic staff in specified program delivery, and leads aquatic classes at city pools.

This job reports to: Pools Supervisor 

Essential Functions

Assists in the scheduling of location assigned staff and programs.
  
Observes swimmers to ensure they adhere to swimming pool rules and maintains order.

Provides swimming lessons as scheduled.  
   
Leads fitness, adaptative aquatic, and recreation water classes.  
      
Provides group and/or individual instruction and training to new lifeguards by teaching a variety of technical skills, policies, and procedures.    

Plans, develops, organizes, and instructs aquatics programs and activities.

Keeps the pool area clean and clear of debris, trip hazards, or other possible injury hazards.

Maintains pool equipment and ensures the proper sanitation of pool and bathhouse facilities.

Assists with registration or onsite questions related to programs and classes at assigned location(s).

Interacts with the public regarding programming and activities. 

Applies resuscitation techniques and renders first aid. 

Receives payment for use of swimming facilities and instruction. 

Maintains documentation of participant attendance, incidents, pool condition or other reports as assigned by supervisor.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education Level & Type:  High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Experience: 1 year as a lifeguard   

Special Job Requirements

American Red Cross or Starguard Lifeguard Certification

American Red Cross First Aid Certification   

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification.  

Candidates will be expected to complete and obtain training in Aqua Fitness Instruction and Adaptive Aquatics prior to the end of their probation and meet any associated certifications in good standing during length of employment.

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
