General Description

Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment at City facilities, including playground equipment, chlorination systems, and plumbing and irrigation systems. Transplants, prunes, and shapes trees and shrubs.

Essential Functions

Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.

Removes dead, broken, and diseased branches and fronds, branches overhanging power or phone lines, branches obscuring or interfering with traffic visibility or flow, and branches constituting potential or actual hazards to life or property.

Removes, treats and patches diseased areas on trees to prevent further deterioration.

Transplants large trees using cranes and backhoes, protects and supports trees for handling and transportation on flat bed trailer truck, boxes or balls trees for storage or transportation.

Prunes and shapes trees and shrubs to enhance beauty and growth.

Removes and disposes of dead, storm damaged, or undesirable trees and shrubs.

Sprays and dusts pesticides on shrubs and trees to control pests and disease, installs cables and supports to assure proper tree growth and shape.

Prepares activity reports and maintains inventory of tools and equipment.

Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools such as shovels, rakes, sledge hammers, wrenches, hand power saws, shears and loppers, trimming knives, axes and picks.

Installs, diagnoses and repairs irrigation systems and equipment.

Operates pickup and dump trucks, backhoes, hydraulic lift truck, flatbed trailer truck, power chippers and similar equipment.

Installs equipment and materials for facilities and surrounding areas by planning, laying out, assembling and installing new equipment, concrete tables, benches and irrigation equipment.

Digs trenches and excavations, pours concrete, blue stakes designated areas, stripes parking lots and paints.

Maintains and repairs facilities and surrounding areas by performing inspections, taking samples, troubleshooting problems, repairing broken equipment or fixtures, maintaining grounds, caring for tools, picking up litter and removing graffiti.

Monitors chlorination equipment and maintains commercial swimming pool equipment.

Trains personnel on safety regulations and the use of tools and equipment, maintains work activity logs, reports and forms, loads and transports materials and equipment, cleans work areas, responds to emergencies, cleans storm damaged areas and performs safety checks on equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Experience Qualifications: High School/GED and at least 2 years (24 months) of experience in maintaining pools and aquatics equipment, or maintaining and repairing facilities and equipment, or installing and maintaining irrigation systems, or pruning, trimming, transplanting, and treating and treating trees and shrubs.

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B required for Construction Maintenance Specialists, and Tree Stewards based on the weight of the vehicle and/or the transportation of HazMat

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class C required for Aquatics Maintenance Specialist based on the weight of the vehicle and/or the transportation of HazMat

Pre-employment Medical Testing Requirements

Basic Physical

75 LB Lift Test

Unless Aquatic Maintenance Specialist, Construction Maintenance Specialist, or Tree Steward, then:

CDL Physical

NIDA Drug Test

If Aquatics then, also:

Respirator Physical

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
