General Description

Under general direction, this classification will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of various communication and computer network related electronic equipment.

Essential Functions

Installs, monitors, maintains, repairs, and documents the City's electronic communications systems including network infrastructure and component parts such as hubs, shelves, cards, and multiplexers, service packs, hot fixes, updates and alarm resets and restorations, fiber optic cabling, and copper wire, as well as fixed, mobile and portable VHF, UHF and microwave radio communication transmitters and receivers such as radio pagers, radar speed meters, digital and logic circuitry, microprocessor controlled devices, automatic receiver selectors, and remote control consoles.

Prepares preliminary drafts of schematic and interconnection diagrams.

Requisitions materials, estimates costs, maintains records and prepares reports.

Makes field trips to locate and clear radio interference, network alarms and resets.

Assembles, installs, maintains, adjusts, and evaluates fixed, mobile, and portable VHF-FM and UHF-FM radio communication transmitters and receivers.

Tests circuits, components, and elements.

Diagnoses and repairs defective components and subassemblies using such test equipment as combination meters, frequency/ deviation monitors and counters, oscilloscopes, signal generators and RF watt- meters.

Makes and records measurements required by FCC rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years of experience in troubleshooting and repairing complex electronic, communication, and computer networking equipment at the component level.

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
