General Description

The Lead Communications Engineer plans, designs, manage, and monitor communications systems and infrastructure. Lead Communications Engineer is a lead position affording guidance to other positions performing the same tasks.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Work is of the broadest scope dealing with highly complex concepts or issues of great importance to the City. Highly important policies, procedures, or precedents may be approved or rejected by individuals in this classification.

Essential Functions

Lead Communications Engineer is a lead position affording guidance to other positions performing the same tasks. It is distinguished from other classifications in the family by performing the highest level of complexity and difficult tasks or assignments

Plans, designs, manage, and monitor communications systems and infrastructure. Assists with design, procurement, installation, and maintenance of communications system equipment.  

Set and prioritize day-to-day tasks and review and assign work requests to ensure efficient operation of the team and timely completion of high priority requests.  

Plans, organize, and guide teams involved in large and/or complex communications system planning, design, and development projects.  

Analyzes and/or troubleshoots highly complex communications network and system issues from senior management, customers, and senior technical staff.

Develops and maintains the City of Tucson Telecommunications Standards to remain consistent with industry standards. Ensures projects get completed in compliance with City standards and industry best practices.

Plans and designs wired and wireless data paths between and within City facilities. Lead Communications Engineer manages FCC licenses for wireless systems.

City of Tucson Telecommunications Standards: NFPA, NEC, TIA/EIA, and BICSI standards.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION LEVEL & TYPE: Four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent (Degree Area): Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Network Engineering, or related engineering field.

EXPERIENCE: At least six years of progressively responsible experience installing, operating and maintaining communications infrastructure and systems, and participating in planning and design.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EQUIVALENCY: Any combination of training, education, and work experience equivalent to 10 years of relevant experience may be acceptable. 

Environment/Working Conditions

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This position would require the ability to Sit, Stand, Bend, Reach, View monitors, use repetitive motions, as well as Talking, Listening, Customer/Client Contact.
