Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing routine and highly technical skilled electrical maintenance and repair work of more than average difficulty on specialized industrial water treatment equipment, control systems and instrumentation. Employee must be qualified and capable of working with voltages up to 13,800 volts, and must be cognizant of electrical hazards and adhere to safe working practices at all times. Work is performed under general supervision and requires the application of reasonable initiative and independent judgment in determining causes of electrical failures and maintaining equipment and systems in operational order. Work is reviewed through observation while in progress and upon completion through results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Detects difficult and complex causes of electrical failures in equipment and wiring; maintains and repairs variable frequency electrical motor drives; maintains and repairs generators, switchgear, transformers, motors, relays, switches, fixtures, high and low voltage feeder circuits and cables, and various other electrical equipment and electronic devices.

Interprets and prepares technical sketches for various water utility electrical systems; insures compliance with electrical codes; performs calculations for electrical layouts and installations.

Performs high potential testing on high voltage feeder cables and motors; maintains and repairs uninterruptable power supplies (u.p.s.); interprets results of vibration analysis and infrared inspections.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of: maintenance and repair of electrical operating equipment and control systems, generator systems, three phase and single phase wiring systems, transformers, power distribution systems, variable speed drivers, high and low voltage switchgear (13,800 volts – 120 volts), meters, governors, timers and other industrial related electrical equipment; instrumentation calibration and troubleshooting techniques.

Ability to: locate, define, repair and modify defects in electrical equipment, complex electrical control systems and basic electronic circuits; plans, layout, install, alter, repair and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment; interpret and work from electrical technical sketches, blueprints, and schematics; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; attention to detail and inspection.

Skill in: the use and care of electrical test equipment and in testing techniques.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor. 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school supplemented by courses in basic electricity and three (3) years of working experience in industrial electrical maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of:
  • A valid Florida Driver’s license 
  • Certification for Level I and Level II Electrical Skills and Level I Instrumentation and Control skills or ability to obtain within 18 months.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
