Serves as principal assistant to a building maintenance supervisor in directing general maintenance and repair activities including carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding, roofing, plastering, masonry, and electrical repair on municipal building, facilities, and equipment; instructs personnel in use of safe work practices.
Distributes work orders and explains to crew the nature of assignments to be performed; performs demonstration of work sequences, as necessary; inspects work for conformance to accepted standards; transports people, materials, tools, and equipment to and from sites.
Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics; measures angles, distances, and elevations; builds concrete foundations to facilitate proper installation; builds forms for concrete structures such as sidewalks and curbs, manholes, and pipelines, etc.; prepares electrical and telephone service for Tampa Convention Center events.
Installs and repairs suspended ceilings, tile walls, and floors to facilitate the upkeep of buildings; installs and repairs doors and door fixtures; replaces/repairs fences; installs construction signs and barricades in order to reroute traffic; removes graffiti throughout the city (e.g. traffic control boxes, public buildings, etc.).
Maintains up-to-date inventory and payroll records; compiles necessary reports; orders supplies and equipment, when assigned by the supervisor.
Oversees maintenance and repair operation in absence of supervisor.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
Some knowledge of: basic records keeping.
Ability to: perform and instruct others in performance of a variety of building maintenance and repair activities requiring physical strength; oversee and review work of others; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Skill in: use and care of hand tools, power tools, and other related equipment; operation of various types of motor vehicles.
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
