Posting as it will provide important information regarding the application
process and promotional exam.
An employee in this class is responsible for supervisory tasks of average difficulty involving planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of detectives, police officers or other personnel. Under general supervision, employees must exercise initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned tasks to include performance appraisals, investigation and adjustment of grievances, and discipline of subordinates. The employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in dealing with the public and be able to make accurate decisions and give advice to subordinate officers calmly and quickly in emergency or hazardous situations. Most positions require the employee to work on rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Work is reviewed through reports submitted, observation and results obtained.
Considerable knowledge of: civil and criminal laws, police rules
and regulations and standard operating procedures; modern police procedures,
methods and terminology.
Some knowledge of: supervisory and administrative
techniques; police personnel administration; basic psychology; the operation of
electronic surveillance equipment may be required. Ability to: perform
complete and thorough investigations; give directions and act calmly and
quickly in emergency or hazardous situations; write clear and accurate reports;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers,
supervisors, officials and recruits as necessary.
Skill in: the use and care of firearms and other
standard police equipment.
For Examination Participation:

Four (4) years of
experience with the Tampa Police Department; and
·
Must currently be
assigned as a Corporal or Detective

Examination Scoring:

The written test will be a
combination of 80 multiple choice questions and 20 multiple-choice
in-basket questions. Candidates must attain a minimum passing score of 70% on
the written test. Employees who earn a passing score on the written test, will
be granted education and seniority points consistent with Article 35.3.5.
As previously determined, seniority will be calculated up to the date of the application
deadline, June 16, 2023 at midnight . Candidates who qualify for
Veterans' Preference based on the required documentation will have the
appropriate points assigned based on their category after earning a passing
score per current Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs guidelines
(http://floridavets.org) Additional information related to source material
question breakdown will be communicated in the invitation to sit for the exam.
Education Points (to receive education points, the
college attended must be accredited as recognized by the FDLE salary incentive
program):

No degree = 0 points

Associate degree = 3 points

Bachelor's Degree = 5
points

Doctorate Degree = 10 points
Candidates participating in
this promotional process for the first time must submit a copy of their degree
or official transcript (with signature and/or seal affixed) to Employment
Services prior to the closing date/filing deadline. Candidates who participated
in the 2021 promotion process will have points awarded based on the degree
currently on file in Employment Services and/or verified by the TPD Personnel
Unit.
If
an attained degree is not on file with TPD Personnel, it is the candidate’s
responsibility to forward a copy of the degree or official transcript
(with signature and/or seal affixed) showing the degree has been awarded.
All forwarded education documents must be received prior to 4:00PM
on June 16, 2023 to receive consideration for education points. The
transcript or diploma may be scanned and attached via upload to
