Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for enforcing fire prevention codes. Work is of more than average difficulty and includes enforcing fire prevention codes. This position requires previously acquired knowledge, abilities and skills. An employee in this position performs as lead inspector. Most functions are performed in the field, requiring the operation of a lightweight motor vehicle to travel among worksites, and involve extensive public contact. Employees must be capable of maintaining accurate records, drafting complete and concise written reports, and performing tasks requiring light to moderate physical exertion. Employees are required to maintain combat firefighter readiness as they are subject to deployment in that capacity. Work schedules vary and might include nights, weekends and holidays on a regular or irregular basis. Although under general supervision, employees are often physically removed from superiors and might be required to provide leadership and training to inspectors and others. Work is reviewed through consultation, observation and submitted reports.

Examples of Duties

Leads, plans, and/or assigns the work of inspectors; serves as a liaison between subordinates and upper levels of management; coaches subordinates as required; is responsible for understanding and interpreting the Rules and Regulations and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG), accurate dissemination of information, and any other communications of a departmental nature.

Conducts fire prevention inspections of commercial, industrial and multi-family structures including childcare facilities, apartment houses, theaters, and places of public assembly; inspects existing or new structures and facilities under construction for compliance with fire prevention ordinances and codes. 

Informs owners, managers and other responsible parties of violations detected; explains corrections necessary and date by which corrections must be instituted; issues citations when voluntary compliance is not obtained. 

Trains and educates inspectors and combat fire personnel in the process and techniques of conducting fire prevention inspections. 

Conducts public information programs, explaining fire prevention and safety measures through lectures, demonstrations and audio-visual presentations; arranges for tours of fire installations and public demonstrations of equipment. 

Maintains records of scheduled and completed assignments; documents findings in narrative and statistical reports; drafts written summaries sufficiently detailed and accurate for use in legal proceedings. 

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of: fire prevention laws, codes and ordinances; fire prevention and inspection techniques; building materials, construction practices and mechanical systems related to fire prevention, fire suppression and the safeguarding of life and property from fire; lead responsibilities; firefighting principles and practices.

Ability to: enforce fire prevention codes and ordinances firmly, tactfully and impartially; prepare written and oral reports and impart them effectively; performs tasks requiring light to moderate physical exertion; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, law enforcement and inspectional services personnel, builders, property owners, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Eight (8) years of experience in the Tampa Fire Rescue service including three (3) years in the Fire Prevention Division.

Additional requirements must be met to qualify: 
  • Currently classified as Fire Inspector 
  • Must be assigned to the fire prevention prior to October 1, 2022 
  • Currently compensated at the rank of F07 
  • Meet the minimum qualifications for Fire Inspector II as listed in Article 32 of the collective bargaining agreement by October 1, 2026
  • Be listed in the February 2, 2026, letter that is included in the current collective bargaining agreement


NOTE: All of the required education, for eligibility purposes must be submitted prior to the deadline.

Education points will be awarded as referenced in appendix F of the IAFF contract. A copy of the diploma should be submitted if a degree was conferred. If a copy of the diploma is not available, an official transcript clearly showing a diploma conferred date can be used as proof of graduation. Acceptable certifications listed in appendix F or proof of degree must be submitted prior to the posted filing deadline.

Licenses or Certifications

ALL CURRENT LICENSURES AND/OR CERTIFICATES MUST BE ATTACHED WITH THE APPLICATION BEFORE THE FILING DEADLINE

Possession of: 
  • A valid Florida driver's license. 
  • Florida State Fire Inspector I certification 
  • Florida State Fire Inspector II certification 
  • Successful completion of the Company Officer Class (certificate or proof of course completion)

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
