An
employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of assignments
involving installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of two-way radio
equipment, laptops, GPS devices, vehicle lighting, and other public safety
related electronics. Under general supervision, employee performs tasks which
are of more than average difficulty requiring exercise of reasonable initiative
and independent judgment. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon
completion through conferences, technical inspections, observation, and results
obtained.
Installs, maintains, services, and repairs municipal
communication systems consisting of fixed and mobile base stations, BDA
devices, antennas, mobile and portable radios, GPS's and laptops. Software
installation, vehicle electrical systems, emergency lighting, 700/800 MHz
trunking and, P25 digital- installation and service.
Checks and prepares equipment to verify that it is ready
for use; loads and unloads heavy equipment and supply items; operates light
automotive equipment.
Works at remote sites; handles an on call 24/7 shift for
one week at a time on a rotating 7-week basis.
Completes daily time/activity reports; enters detailed
description of work into a computerized work management system with
emphasis on time/property/parts/cost tracking.
Documents processes and procedures, collaborates and shares
acquired knowledge.
Operates radio equipment within a live active environment,
using accepted protocols.
Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of: radiotelephone communication systems, electronic system
principles, and computer hardware/software operations. Well versed in
electrical theory, maintenance practices, and safety precautions related to
electronic and radio‑frequency equipment. Skilled in understanding and
supporting the operating principles of radio transmitters and their associated
power supplies.
Working knowledge of: methods, tools, equipment, computer software and material
used in radio testing, repair, and maintenance; occupational hazards and
appropriate safety precautions; MS Office suite.
Ability to: detect defects, repair, maintain and install radio
communications, electrical and electronic equipment; read and work from plans
and schematics; establish and maintain effective working relationships with
others; follow oral and written instructions and prepare clear, concise, and
accurate reports; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance;
operate a lightweight motor vehicle.
Skilled in: diagnosing electrical and electronic problems; use and
care of electrical and electronic repair tools, computer hardware,
software and basic networking.
Possession
of a General Radiotelephone Operator’s license issued by the (FCC) Federal
Communications Commission or certification by NABER (National Association of
Business and Educational Radio) or APCO (Association of Public Safety
Communications Officials).
Possession
of a valid Florida driver’s license.
Possession
of CompTIA A+ or similar certification.
