Introduction
This is an
advanced level skilled work at the Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT)
plant. Bargaining unit position.
Nature Of Work
An employee in
this class performs advanced skilled work of more than average difficulty in the
areas of instrumentation & control. Under minimal supervision, the employee
performs duties and assigned tasks in conformance with established procedures
requiring the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment.
Employees in this position are considered lead technicians with extensive
skills in troubleshooting, job planning and training of junior technicians.
Many work activities involve hazardous materials and equipment and confined
spaces. Employees must comply with appropriate safety precautions when dealing
with gas systems, electrical systems and other similar components and processes
within the plant environment. Shift work and On-call duties may be required
including nights, weekends, and holidays. Tasks
require the ability to work in a team and goal-oriented environment. Work is reviewed by observation, results
and goals attained, and reports submitted.
Examples of Duties
Instrumentation
examples of pm or repair work to include but not limited. Builds control panels, Operates, adjusts and
monitors wastewater treatment process equipment; uses hand tools, power tools,
and specialized electrical testing and calibration equipment, inspects,
maintains, and repairs buildings, installs and maintains communication systems,
programming, installation, repair of HMI
and OIT’s. Preferably
Emerson, GE and
Allen Bradley.
Tech III employees act as the
lead technician in planning jobs, training and overseeing work of junior
technicians. Writes standard operating procedures; demonstrates tasks to
lower-level employees for training purposes, monitors and records readings on
all equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures, maintains
current knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) information and
procedures, provides support for new projects, performs related work as
required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of: basic safety practices; unit control panels; electrical switchgear, transformers and power distribution systems; the principles of wastewater treatment processes; emergency response procedures and proper communications procedures.
Ability to: establish and maintain productive working relationships with co-workers and the public; understand and follow written and oral instructions; lift 50 pounds; climb ladders; work in confined spaces; utilize basic safety practices (e.g. lockout/tagout, MSDS); apply intermediate computer skills; demonstrate electrical safety procedures; collect and analyze data and generate reports; demonstrate correct task performance to lower level employees; operate specialized equipment such as manlift and mansafe retrieval hoist; operate heavy equipment; identify proper mechanical lubrication requirements and applications; identify various types of electrical equipment; monitor and record readings on all equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 20-40 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED with six (6) years of instrumentation & control experience; or an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Valid Florida driver’s license required.
External hires
must complete the current departmental matrix skill set up to AWT Plant Technician
III level, within 30 months of employment; but be able to demonstrate the ability
to perform all levels of work in their craft upon hiring.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
