The position is an entry level engineering position with the Wastewater Department. The employee will be responsible for a variety of engineering assignments related to the design and project management of Wastewater Department Capital Improvement Projects. Typical projects handled by this position include force main/gravity sewer pipeline replacements, pumping station rehabilitations, wastewater treatment plant improvements and collection system rehabilitation projects.
The work is of average difficulty. Under general supervision, the employee exercises some initiative and independent judgement to successfully meet objectives and goals. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through conferences, oral and written reports and observation of results obtained.
Performs engineering analysis, collects and analyzes data, and conducts studies to evaluate the adequacy and condition of wastewater collection system facilities as needed to develop short- and long-term capital improvement plans and to determine improvements required to address the needs for proposed and future projects.
Prepares the documentation including Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) and Design Criteria Packages to retain Engineering consultants or design-build teams.
Designs or manages wastewater capital improvement projects for replacing, rehabilitating, and upgrading collection system, pumping station, and treatment facilities.
Reviews construction plans of projects designed by consultants, other City Departments, and other agencies to determine compliance with City standards and adequacy of the design. Prepares related correspondence. Consults with engineers, contractors, developers, agency representatives and represents the Department at meetings related to the project.
Coordinates with department personnel in our treatment plant and maintenance divisions to develop project scopes, cost estimates, and schedules.
Research alternative design and construction methods and materials.
Reviews contractor’s submittals and request for information (RFI) to determine compliance with the project’s plans and specifications.
Evaluates alternative equipment, materials, and/or construction methods.
Assists in the resolution of conflicts that arise during construction projects.
Trains sub-professional, technical, and clerical personnel, as required.
Performs related work as required.
Some knowledge of: principles and practices of Wastewater, Civil, or Environmental engineering; federal, state, and municipal rules, regulations and ordinances, and other pertinent documents; developments and information in assigned field of engineering.
Ability to: read and interpret engineering plans, and specifications; analyze engineering data and draw sound conclusions; develop skill in the use and care of engineering tools; prepare and submit clear, concise reports both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably related to the area of assignment.
NOTE: Individuals currently in their last semester of school may apply. Should they be selected prior to graduation, they will have six (6) months to complete their degree in order to retain their position.
