This is
manual and semi-skilled services and general maintenance and repair
work. Bargaining unit position.
An employee in this class is responsible for
performing various manual and semi-skilled tasks of routine difficulty in
horticulture, landscape maintenance and repair, light construction, and/or
other related municipal services, operating power tools and equipment and/or
applying specific knowledge and skills related to area of assignment. Though
under immediate supervision, employee receives instructions orally and in
writing and must exercise some initiative and independent judgment in
performing assigned tasks. Some positions might require employee to work
part-time or irregular hours and/or to perform tasks of a hazardous nature.
Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and
results obtained.
This position participates in the management
of municipal horticulture installations and maintenance along many of the City rights-of-way,
within 196 parks and other City owned properties. This position is hands on
with a main focus of landscape maintenance including planting, pruning and
fertilizing.
Performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks
related to horticulture, landscape maintenance, nursery and greenhouse growing,
and repair of nursery and greenhouse facilities, and light construction.
Operates electric, gasoline, hydraulic, and
pneumatic driven power tools including brush cutters, chain saws, pipe cutters,
power hack saws, pumps, lawn mowers, line trimmers, trim edgers, bench
grinders, drill presses, and paint spray guns; fixes or repairs small engines, line
trimmers and other devices; maintains tools and equipment used in maintenance
and repair. Might serve as a trades helper by performing semi-skilled
carpentry, painting, pipelaying, plumbing, tile work, brick masonry, welding,
basic electrical repair, and cement work; receives on-the-job training in
higher level semi-skilled and skilled trades.
Performs minor maintenance and grounds
keeping of municipal facilities and grounds; cleans walkways; empties
waste receptacles; waters grass and shrubs; performs landscaping and gardening
work; plants, prunes, and trims shrubs; applies fertilizer and insecticide;
performs custodial duties with immediate responsibility for sweeping, cleaning,
mopping, and dusting; removes graffiti throughout the city using chemicals or
steam pressure washer.
Installs irrigation systems underground,
including laying pipes and electrical lines to facilitate automatic system
operation; installs conduit system, above/underground systems and pull boxes in
order to facilitate operations.
Manually loads and unloads heavy items,
including supplies, equipment, and materials; transports people, material,
tools, and equipment to and from sites to ensure efficiency and safety.
Operates radio or communications equipment;
some positions might require operation of a motor vehicle and some minor
vehicle maintenance.
Performs related work as required.
Some knowledge of: horticulture practices, plant care, minor repair, maintenance
and construction methods; occupational hazards and appropriate safety
precautions; cleaning materials, methods and equipment where required; plant
care, where required.
Ability to:
understand and follow oral and written instructions; perform tasks requiring
physical strength and endurance; operate a motor vehicle; establish and
maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Skill in:
use and care of hand and power tools and other related materials and equipment.
Ability to
lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and
outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.
