Traffic Control Technician II

An employee in this class is responsible for performing assignments involving installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of electrical and electronic traffic signal systems and controls and street lighting poles and wiring.  Under general supervision, employees perform tasks, at times under hazardous conditions, which are of average difficulty requiring exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. Positions may require employee to serve in a lead capacity and work nights and weekends.  Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspections, observation, and results obtained.

Installs, maintains, modifies, and repairs solid state, electrical, and electronic traffic signal control systems and equipment; installs timings, checks operation and provides feedback to engineering design concerning operational improvements and problems; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on traffic control systems in the field and shop; inspects, sets-up and shop tests new controllers and equipment before installation; installs and repairs mini-computer adaptors; installs overhead and underground communication cables; establishes color codes and implements circuits for coordination system; connects circuits in new and existing cable networks to controllers; installs and troubleshoots high voltage street lighting systems to facilitate public safety.

 

Serves as crew leader and participates in constructing, rebuilding, and maintaining traffic control systems at street intersections; installs traffic controllers, cabinets, signal heads, signal cables, lines between adjacent controllers and push buttons; constructs pedestrian cross walk systems; inspects work of lower level personnel to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications; completes daily time/activity reports on crew/self to document work activities; ensures that adequate tools and equipment are available; ensures proper upkeep and use and care of vehicles, tools and equipment.

 

Troubleshoots and field repairs traffic signal control systems, cabinets and field wiring, including communications cable to keep equipment in proper operation; detects causes of electrical equipment and instrument failure for immediate correction and prevention; reads, interprets and works from blueprints, diagrams and schematics.

 

Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs, barricades and cones as required for work zone safety; manually loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment and materials.

 

Drives and operates aerial lift platform bucket truck, tower truck, and light automotive equipment; operates light mechanical equipment; operates specialized electronic test equipment for radio and traffic signal control equipment; operates CB and base radio.

 

Performs related work as required.

Working knowledge of:  basic principles and practices of electricity; methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment pertinent to construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical traffic signal systems and controls; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to:  maintain, install, detect defects in and make repairs to electrical and electro-mechanical traffic control equipment; read and work from plans and schematics; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; follow oral and written instructions; prepare and submit clear, concise and accurate reports; lead and assign work to others; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance in out-of-doors and inclement weather.

Skill in:  diagnosing electrical and electro-mechanical traffic control equipment problems; use and care of electrical and electro-mechanical testing devices, repair tools, and equipment.

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of experience in electrical and electronic traffic control equipment maintenance, repair, and installation work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class “B” with Air Brakes.

Possession of International Municipal Signal Association Level II Certification preferred within 18 months.

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
