Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for acting as a team leader for a group of mechanical and electrical subordinates involved in both major and minor daily maintenance and repair activities on mechanical and electrical systems involving pumps, valves, air compressors, mechanical power trains, gear boxes, mixers, generators, refrigeration systems, chemical feed systems, motors, turbines, conveyors and other water treatment plant equipment or devices. Work is of considerable difficulty and requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment in identifying causes of mechanical and electrical failures and leading subordinates in correction of those failures. Employee works under general supervision, with work reviewed through observation while in progress and results obtained upon completion.

Examples of Duties

Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs small and large capacity finished and raw water pumps and motors used in the water treatment process; identifies and corrects causes of mechanical and electrical failures of equipment.

Maintains and repairs valves and actuators that are controlled pneumatically, hydraulically or electrically; maintains and repairs diesel and turban driven emergency generator systems and equipment.

Interprets and prepares sketches and operating procedures for mechanical and electrical system layouts and installations; maintains, modifies and repairs electrical fixtures and basic power machine circuitry up to 240 volts; installs and aligns large and small direct and indirect coupled pumps, motors, gear boxes, and other shaft driven equipment.

Performs specialized maintenance and repair to: water treatment chlorinators; lime slakers; ozone, ammonia and fluoride systems; sludge processing equipment.

Performs welding using Mig and Tig welders; operates lathes, milling machine, radial drill press, and other machine shop equipment.

Performs data input of information into computerized maintenance management system.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: standard tools, methods, materials and practices utilized in the industrial maintenance field.

Working knowledge of: occupational hazards in the industrial maintenance field and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: act in a lead capacity and plan, organize and oversee the activities of other employees; read and interpret specifications and blueprints used in the mechanical and electrical industrial field; identify the causes of mechanical and/or electrical equipment failure and make prompt and correct repairs; operate lathe, milling machine, radial drill, band saw and other machine shop equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school, supplemented by training courses in industrial maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and three (3) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required; Certification for Basic Level I and II Mechanical Skills and Level I Electrical Skills per Tampa Water Department training program.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
