Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, controlling, and participating in the activities of the division. Work is of considerable difficulty and includes responsibility for assigning, scheduling, training, overseeing, and reviewing the work of subordinate personnel. Additionally, employee performs technical inspections when complex or unusual situations arise and performs other inspections as required. Most tasks are performed in the field, requiring the operation of a lightweight motor vehicle in traveling among work locations, and include some activities which require light to moderate physical exertion. Work requires comprehensive and technical knowledge of fire prevention codes and standards related to construction, fire protection systems, and hazardous conditions. Considerable initiative and independent judgment are required in exercising control of effective programs. The employee is responsible for initiating and acting upon subordinates' recommendations concerning the actions taken and citation authority associated with enforcement of the fire code. Extensive public contact is involved, often in sensitive and demanding circumstances involving attempts to obtain voluntary code compliance from uncooperative persons and when actions must be taken and citations issued. Work requires the exercise of tact, diplomacy, initiative, and independent judgment in making decisions, directing or personally accomplishing the implementation of decisions, and performing related supervisory tasks. Employees are required to maintain combat firefighter readiness as they are subject to deployment in that capacity. Work is performed under general supervision of the Fire Marshal and reviewed through conferences, reports submitted and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Supervises and is responsible for activities of the new construction or existing construction fire inspection division; assigns work to subordinates and explains any specific instructions associated therewith; evaluates performance of employees and completes performance evaluations; recommends discipline as required; serves as initial respondent to grievances; reviews work of subordinates through field visits and checks of submitted reports and records.

Trains and supervises personnel in carrying out an effective fire safety inspection program; conducts formal classroom and field training, including continuing education of personnel; assigns new personnel to work in conjunction with experienced staff members and monitors their progress through conferences and observation.

Supervises: fire prevention inspections of commercial, industrial and multi-family structures; inspections of existing structures and facilities under construction for compliance with fire prevention ordinances; explanations of violations detected and corrections necessary; and, issuance of citations; performs such inspections as necessary.

Reviews construction plans, checking for compliance with applicable fire prevention codes; participates in meetings with developers, architects, engineers, and others, explaining code requirements prior to plan development; reviews such plans as necessary.

Advises the Fire Marshal about matters concerning the division; participates in developing long- and short-range plans to improve service delivery; assists in developing the budget.

Responds orally and in writing to questions, inquiries and complaints; prepares and submits statistical, narrative and other reports.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of: effective management and supervisory techniques; fire prevention codes, laws and ordinances.

Considerable knowledge of: fire prevention and inspection techniques; building materials, construction practices and mechanical systems related to fire prevention, fire suppression and the protection of life and property from fire.

Working knowledge of: firefighting principles and techniques.

Ability to: enforce fire prevention codes and ordinances firmly, tactfully and impartially; read and interpret mechanical and building construction plans; assign, schedule, manage, supervise, and review the work of subordinates; prepare written and oral reports and impart them effectively; perform work requiring light to moderate physical exertion; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, subordinates, representatives of other agencies, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Twelve (12) years of experience in fire service including three (3) years as an Inspector/Investigator (F7).
  • Employees with a minimum of (11) years on the job and (2)years as a Fire Inspector/Investigator may apply and will become eligible when attaining the required (12) and (3) years of experience.
  • Must currently be an Inspector/ Investigator (F7).
  • Successful completion of 60 college credits (30 of which must be in the areas of fire science/administration, emergency medical service, business or public administration, or industrial education with a major in fire science/administration).
  • Some managerial or supervisory experience preferred.
  • For new construction division, plans review experience is preferred.

A copy of the diploma should be submitted if a degree was conferred.  If a copy of the diploma is not available, an official transcript clearly showing a diploma conferred date can be used as proof of graduation.  In cases where graduation did not occur, an official transcript copy should be submitted to show the total number of credits attained from each institution attended where credits were earned.  This includes recognized fire science college credit equivalent courses which may yield educational points if accompanied by regional/national accredited college or university course catalog (HCC, Polk State, St. Pete College, etc.;) citing equivalent course name and course description.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: Submit all applicable licensures and  certifications with application  

 A valid Florida driver's license.

Florida State certification as: Fire Inspector I.
