Introduction

This is responsible work in the receipt, storage, issuance, and disposal of property in the custody of the Tampa Police Department.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks involving the receipt, safe storage, and release of property in a manner which preserves the chain of custody of evidence. Work is of average difficulty and requires that the employees maintain records and prepare receipts. Although procedures are well defined and must be strictly followed, reasonable initiative and independent judgment are required. Employee works rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed through observation and verification of records maintained.

Examples of Duties

Takes custody of and is responsible for safekeeping of all money, property, and other valuables, including automobiles, bicycles, etc. as well as small items that come into the hands of the police department as evidence, by confiscation, or by recovery of lost and stolen articles.

Uses a computer database to record information regarding articles received which includes a description of the article, the name of person to whom it belongs, the person on the police force from whom it was received, and for what purpose it is being retained.

Issues property being retained as evidence to proper officer at time of trial and receives receipt for same.

Releases recovered lost and stolen property to proper owners upon proof of their ownership and after receiving receipt; releases impounded vehicles, calculating impound fees, receiving cash, and preparing receipts.

Performs computer searches; assists in completing documentation required for auctions.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: sound records keeping methods and storekeeping practices.

Some knowledge of: standard methods, practices, and procedures employed in the storage and issuance of evidence and other materials.

Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain property control records in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures; perform work requiring moderate physical exertion; perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy; effectively and efficiently utilize computers, calculators and adding machines; communicate effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, other personnel, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school with one (1) year of experience in the storage and issuance of materials and supplies, preferably in a secure storage situation, or one (1) year of related clerical or records keeping experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida drivers license required.

Examination

Written Test (Time Limit: 1-hour).

Applicants must telephone the Employment Services Office (813-274-8911) to schedule an appointment for the written test.

Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
