Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled assignments in mechanical maintenance and repair of municipal buildings, facilities, equipment, and devices. Tasks are of average difficulty and are performed in accordance with established procedures requiring the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. Employees are expected to follow all safety rules when performing work, which is hazardous, or when operating power tools or equipment. Under general supervision, employees receive instructions orally and in writing. Employees might be required to work irregular hours. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion, through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Performs general maintenance work including carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding, roofing, plastering, masonry, and pipe-fitting on municipal buildings, facilities, and equipment; builds concrete foundations to facilitate proper installation; builds forms for concrete structures such as sidewalks and curbs, manholes, and pipelines, etc.

Installs traffic signs to facilitate traffic; places safety barriers in road in order to warn drivers of potential hazards; removes graffiti.

Participates in installation of sprinkler and underground irrigation systems, including laying pipes and electrical lines to operate system; tests systems; maintains, repairs, and adjusts meters, governors, and timers.

Repairs electrical systems, electric motors, and lighting equipment; installs pumps, hydraulic and pneumatic valves, compressors, steam turbines, high pressure boilers, diesel engines, and electric motors; installs phone lines; may install and remove temporary electrical services.

Repairs various hand tools such as rakes and shovels; maintains clean and safe work area; operates various automotive equipment; checks fire extinguishers for needed charge or refill; completes daily time/activity reports; prepares requisitions for job supplies and materials.

Refinishes floors and furniture; remodels public buildings and facilities; constructs shelves, cabinets, bookcases, partitions, shelters, and other wood or metal structures.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: methods, practices, tools, and materials used in building and mechanical maintenance and repair work; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: perform a variety of semi-skilled assignments associated with building and mechanical maintenance and repairs requiring physical strength; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Skill in: the use and care of tools and equipment pertinent to the performance of maintenance and repair work; operating various motor vehicles and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of tenth grade and one (1) year of experience in general building and mechanical maintenance and repair work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida drivers license; a valid Florida commercial drivers license may be required.

Examination

Written Test  (Time Limit: 2 hours).  Applicants must telephone the Employment Services Office (813-274-8911) to schedule an appointment for the written test.(Photo Identification is required at time of testing.) Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
