This position entails seasoned, highly skilled,
and responsible leadership in operating all Front-Load and/or Roll-Off collection
vehicles, routes and assisting the supervisor with various, complex activities
related to these business units. Bargaining unit position.
An
employee in this class is responsible to assist supervision in the coordination
and operation of Front-Load and/or
Roll-Off collection vehicles/routes.
Under general supervision, an employee receives instructions orally and in
writing and performs tasks that are of significant difficulty, including the considerable
manipulative skills to ensure safe operations of all collection activities in
areas of limited space and congested traffic. The exercise of consequential
initiative and independent judgment is required in completing this work. Work
may also include performing a wide variety of routine duties in assisting in
solid waste equipment maintenance and service operation as assigned. Performs
physical tasks related to Front-Load and/or Roll-Off collection. Work is
reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation, Routeware
reports and results obtained.
Trains and mentors both new and experienced drivers on essential procedures, including appropriate hand signals, operational methods, safety protocols, and industry best practices. Provides suggestions regarding safety and efficiencies as well as considerate support for the Supervisor. Utilizes the vehicle radio in accordance with standard operating procedures. Initiate routes using Routeware software and assist in reassignment of work and drivers, in the event of callouts. Supports drivers by ensuring proper vehicle operations, maintaining cleanliness within the cab, cleaning behind the blade, container wash outs and performing minor maintenance on trucks and equipment. Supervises the activities of an assistant driver and/or collector assigned to the vehicle. Operates vehicles to transport materials to disposal sites and manages mechanisms for unloading. Informs customers about correct collection procedures and updates them on service schedules. Completes daily vehicle inspection reports, noting maintenance needs for immediate attention at the start, during, and at the end of each shift, as well as documenting daily collection route details and time reports.
Considerable Knowledge of: efficient
commercial routing and operation of Front-Load and/or Roll-Off refuse
collection vehicles operation and maintenance characteristics of solid waste
collection vehicles used in solid waste operations, occupational hazards, and
appropriate safety precautions.
Some Knowledge of: building ordinances, traffic ordinances and regulations governing heavy-duty equipment operation, the occupational hazards, and safety precautions required of the work.
Ability to: systematically evaluate needed repairs and make minor operating adjustments related to equipment; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; prepare and maintain routine records and reports of activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; utilize Routeware to navigate routes to effectively collect scheduled service locations; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance during all types of weather; oversee and assign work; complete and submit oral and written reports in a clear and concise manner; establish effective working relationships with others.
Skill in: the safe operation and care of all assigned Front-Load and/or Roll-Off equipment.Graduation
from an accredited high school, vocational /training school and three (3) years
of experience in the operation of one or more of the following types of
equipment: Front-Loading and/or Roll-Off refuse collection vehicles and six (6)
months experience in performing heavy physical work; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience.
Possession
of a valid Florida Commercial driver's license, Class “A” or “B” with air
brakes. Must successfully demonstrate operational skill sets for a Front-Load and/or Roll-Off collection
vehicles.
