Senior Designer and Digital Strategist

Introduction

This is highly responsible professional work overseeing the City’s creative services in the areas of graphic design and social media strategy, while supervising the work of other employees.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this position is responsible for the visual representation of the City of Tampa and for maintaining and consistently upholding all standards of brand identity. The employee will develop and implement strategies to convey the brand through print, video, and digital content. The employee is responsible for rendering a variety of creative services of more than average difficulty in the areas of graphic design and social media strategy.  The role requires collaboration with other departments and team members to ensure consistency and drafting of the proper messaging that supports the city’s goals. The employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in performing work assignments. Tact and courtesy are required, as the position often requires higher-level executive and client interaction skills. Work is reviewed through conferences, observation of final product and feedback from departments regarding results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Oversees, directs, assigns, reviews and edits design and illustration work of other design team personnel; coordinates work with staff, team members and contractors to keep projects on schedule; monitors work to ensure compliance with the City’s marketing objectives.  

Design, compose, illustrate and produce municipal documents and visuals, including electronic newsletters.  

Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images, video or HTML) to all applicable social media outlets.

Manage photo and graphic archives; take photographs; draft marketing messages and advisories.

Proactively brainstorm, including mock up design ideas and presenting strategic communication idea to staff.   

Collaborate with other departments and team members to ensure consistency and draft proper messaging   

Remains current with industry trends and assesses equipment and software to ensure it is up to date.  

Coordinate printing services as needed.  

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: English grammar, composition, and punctuation; publication formats and procedures; methods, principles, and practices utilized in graphic design; programs utilized in graphic design including Adobe CC and MS Office and all applicable social media outlets.

Some knowledge of: photographic techniques and materials; amateur video editing software; website development.

Ability to: effectively supervise a team to meet required deadlines and goals; think strategically; complete complex assignments in an accurate and timely manner; work from layout, rough sketches, oral and written instructions; maintain quality check on all pieces; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, department representatives, and general public.

Skill in: the operation of Macintosh and HP computers; the use of Apple iPad and iPhone.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field and five (5) years’ experience in design and layout, including (3) years’ experience in a lead designer or supervisor role; OR an associate’s degree in graphic design or related field and seven (7) years’ experience in design and layout including (3) years’ experience in a lead designer or supervisor role.

Licenses or Certifications

Valid Florida drivers’ license required.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
