Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing semi-skilled tasks of hazardous nature involving care and maintenance of municipal trees. Under general supervision, employee performs assignments, which are of average difficulty requiring exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed through observation and results obtained.

 

Examples of Duties

Has responsibility for care and maintenance of municipal trees; climbs trees and removes dead, broken and undesired branches or trees; trims trees for needed clearance; uses and maintains automotive equipment such as trash crane, dump truck, backhoe, forklift, and bucket-trucks; uses hand tools, pruning shears, power saws, and similar equipment in trimming trees; removes trash and debris from ditches and ponds.

Acts as team leader on project basis; applies fertilizer and insecticide.

Uses maps to find location of job and drives to job site.

Loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment, and materials manually in order to complete assigned duties; installs construction signs and barricades in order to re-route traffic.

Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics; tests irrigation system in order to detect and repair leaks and ascertain that system is in working order.

Prepares, reviews, and submits payroll and time cards to ensure that employees receive paychecks on time.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: tree trimming methods and techniques; municipal street locations; the use, care and maintenance of tools and equipment utilized in tree maintenance; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; climb and work at heights; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; operate a motor vehicle.

Skill in: use and care of tools and equipment used in tree climbing and trimming.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the eighth grade and one (1) year of experience in general or semi-skilled labor including six (6) months in tree trimming experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: a pesticide application certificate; a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class "B" with Air Brakes.
