Introduction

This is highly responsible administrative, technical, and professional work in managing the operations of city’s water department.

Nature Of Work

Under administrative direction, an employee in this class helps organize, direct, and coordinate activities of water department to provide the community with a reliable and efficient supply of water for domestic, industrial, commercial, agricultural, and fire protection purposes. Work is of unusual difficulty and involves the application of extensive initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted, and results achieved. Appointed position; employee serves at the pleasure of the Mayor.

Examples of Duties

As assigned by the department director; plans and directs the efficient operation of the city’s water utility; represents the department at city, regional, state, national, and international levels concerning water issues; coordinates operations and facilities to comply with government, state, and local regulations, such as Southwest Florida Water Management District, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the Federal Safe Drinking Act Amendments of 1996.

Confers and negotiates with consultants, engineers, and other departments with respect to special studies, service levels, performance measures, and employee development.

Prepares reports and correspondence; assigns, develops, and evaluates personnel; helps manage department budget and work processes.

Areas of Accountabilities: demonstrates cultural improvement through annual cultural assessment; bi-annual review with team leaders; number of face-to-face meetings with all personnel; timelines of decisions; monitors and demonstrates continuous improvement; identifies problems in early stages; demonstrates and monitors compliance of service level agreements.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s, preferably a master’s degree, in engineering, business or public administration or environmental science and seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in water system operations, construction and maintenance, including three (5) years of experience in supervision or management.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
