The assigned employee will be under the general supervision of their assigned supervisor and/or Division Chief. Considerable initiative and independent judgment are required in exercising control of an effective and informative education program. Work requires that continuous and effective contacts be established and maintained with the community. Preparation of informative materials for public distribution necessitates the exercise of imagination in carrying out assignments. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, written evaluation, and observation of results obtained.

Assists in determining subjects to be covered on an annual basis; submits oral and/or written suggestions for training programs to management based upon training needs which have been identified; develops curriculum and instructs in-service training and related drills and activities.

Writes and distributes training information and memoranda; assists in the evaluation of course content; determines the length of time appropriate for specific training; arranges classroom locations; makes purchasing or printing arrangements for texts, workbooks and other study material.

Assists company officers with materials and/or equipment for use in multi-company or special operations drills.

Assists in scheduling classes, training facilities, and equipment; ensures smooth and proper operation of the in-house training programs to include proper documentation and record keeping.

Assists in the compilation, submittal and maintenance of training records for certification and re-certification of personnel.

Research information and training resources; contacts educational institutions, private vendors and other public jurisdictions to determine the availability of existing training programs; research on-line training, video based training and other training references. Attends department approved seminars, conferences and/or training as required to remain current on division related information; performs administrative functions as required.

Considerable knowledge of safety policies, methods, programs, procedures, and equipment used by TFR, firefighting and emergency medical services skills. Additional knowledge may be required in subject focus area and division assigned to.

Working knowledge of effective communication techniques, including effective public speaking and presentation techniques; training principles, practices, and techniques; methods, materials, and equipment used in making training presentations.

Must have knowledge of computers and relevant software.

Ability to: design and administer Tampa Fire Rescue training programs; prepare effective lesson plans for  designated training programs; write and speak clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings; set clear objectives and measures and monitor process, progress and results of training programs; present instructional materials and evaluate training participants in an effective manner; work cooperatively and interact effectively with others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Currently employed with Tampa Fire Rescue in a sworn capacity with a minimum of 5-years of employment.

Experience as an instructor (Preference will be given to individuals who have experience instructing Fire/EMS related classes).

Successful completion of 30 college credits, (18 of which must be in the areas of fire science/administration, emergency medical services, business or public administration, or education with a major in fire science or emergency medical service).

Current State of Florida Fire Instructor I certification

Current State of Florida Paramedic certification

A current POR for Tampa Fire Rescue

A valid driver’s license

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
