Introduction
This is skilled,
technical vehicle and equipment
maintenance and repair work. Bargaining unit position.
Nature Of Work
An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of
assignments involving maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment utilized
within the Solid Waste department. Tasks are of
more than average difficulty and require the exercise
of reasonable initiative and
independent judgment. Under general
supervision, employees respond to service calls and either make the repair or determine that the
extent of the problem is greater
than their capabilities and refers to Fleet Maintenance division of Public Works or outside vendors. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon
completion through observation, technical inspections and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Perform vehicle and equipment maintenance (PMs) in the yard and in the field.
Performs maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment to include
electronics, instrumentation, small engines
and hydraulic pumps.
Checks and prepares
vehicles and equipment to verify ready for use.
Operates vehicles to test or to transport
to outside repair facilities; uses
hand, bench and testing tools.
Reads, interprets and works from schematics
and other technical documents/user manuals; manages repair parts and equipment
to avoid excessive downtime.
Completes activity reports, vehicle and equipment
repair histories/logs.
Performs related
work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of: methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in equipment
and vehicle maintenance and repair; occupational hazards and appropriate
safety precautions; air brake systems
and hydraulic systems.
Skill in: diagnosing problems with vehicles, refuse trucks, and heavy equipment; use and care of standard tools, equipment and testing devices used in the field; operation of automotive, refuse, and construction equipment.
Ability to: interpret and work from
technical manuals and specifications;
locate, define and repair defects in vehicles and equipment; perform work requiring
physical strength and dexterity; prepare and submit clear, concise reports both
orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships
in a team environment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift over 60 lbs., Mostly
standing; a combination of working indoors and
outdoors. Requires some use of computer,
typing and viewing a monitor.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited
high school or vocational school, preferably with six (6) months of training in vehicle repair and
three (3) year of experience in
maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment;
or an equivalent combination of
training and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid
Florida Commercial driver's license,
Class "B" (non-restricted) with Air Brakes,
or the ability to obtain one within one (1)
year.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
Comments
Employees
may be required to work rotating shifts,
including nights, weekends,
holidays and overtime as needed.
During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of
Tampa, all employees may be required
to work in preparation, response or recover) activities related to the stated
emergency.
