Introduction

This is semi-skilled and lead construction, services and maintenance work.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing and participating in work of a small crew performing construction, maintenance and/or custodial tasks or related municipal services. Under general supervision, employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in completing work assignments, which are of average difficulty and are performed in accordance with established procedures. At times, employee might be required to work under hazardous conditions. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Oversees and participates in work of crews engaged in public works, parks and other municipal operations; oversees operations involving use of heavy-duty trucks, power tools, and equipment; operates light to medium automotive equipment as required.

Directs work of crews involved in repairing damaged streets, and general cleaning and maintenance activities including mowing, harrowing, seeding, planting, trimming, fertilizing, and landscaping; trains new employees; performs custodial tasks including mopping, sweeping, picking up litter and emptying trash.

Installs construction signs and barricades in order to re-route traffic. Maintains records; issues work orders for repairs; requisitions, issues, and accounts for supplies and equipment; prepares time reports and other related documentation. Operates communication equipment such as radio, pagers, etc. in order to communicate with staff.

Creates work orders, inputs data, maintains daily work order data, prepares reports using a variety of computer software such as Word, Excel and Power Point.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: standard methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in construction, maintenance, and repair work; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions; cleaning materials, methods and equipment, where required.

Some knowledge of: basic records keeping.

Ability to: assign, oversee, and review work of lower level personnel; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; maintain records and prepare reports; give clear, detailed instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Skill in: use and care of hand tools, painting equipment, power tools, light to medium automotive equipment, and other related tools and materials.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in construction and maintenance work related to assigned area, including six (6) months of experience in a lead capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license; a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license might be required.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
