This is custodial work.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of custodial tasks to maintain cleanliness of municipal buildings, facilities, adjacent areas, and allied equipment. Tasks are of routine difficulty and are learned through on-the-job training requiring only limited initiative and independent judgment. The duties of some positions in this class of work require that the employee be responsible for the safekeeping and proper use of keys to municipal buildings. The employee may be required to work parttime or irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Under immediate supervision, employee receives instructions orally with work being reviewed while in progress and upon completion through continuous observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Performs custodial tasks including mopping, dusting, waxing, picking up litter, and emptying waste receptacles; washes windows, glass doors, walls, and woodwork; vacuums floors and carpeting; polishes metal and cleans glass work; cleans and provides supplies for restrooms and lounges; replaces light bulbs.

Performs minor groundskeeping adjacent to buildings to include cleaning walkways, emptying waste receptacles, and watering grass and shrubbery.

Ensures security of municipal buildings as required to include locking and unlocking doors, and checking to see that no one is left in the buildings at night; ensures that equipment and material are secured to prevent theft, vandalism, etc.

Sets up and breaks down furniture and equipment for classes.

Completes/prepares paperwork to facilitate ordering of uniforms, supplies, and material; prepares time reports to ensure proper documentation and payroll processing; prepares requisitions in order to have work completed.

Checks fire extinguisher to determine if properly charged or in need of refilling or repair.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to: acquire knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in custodial work; understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; complete minor paperwork; perform tasks requiring moderate physical strength and endurance, where required; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; acquire skill in use and care of tools and equipment utilized in custodial work.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of elementary school, preferably with some general custodial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid drivers license may be required.


During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
