This is supervisory and responsible technical drafting work.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and participating in performance of architectural or civil drafting assignments involving portrayal of basic engineering ideas and information through drawings. Work is of more than average difficulty and includes developing work schedules for subordinate technicians for review by superior and coordinating, assigning, and reviewing activities performed to ensure that work is completed in a timely manner. Work is also reviewed to ensure that proper graphic portrayal techniques, methods, and procedures are used, as well as for neatness, clarity, accurate portrayal of the design, and inclusion of adequate information for the intended purpose. Employees prepare drawings of facilities, equipment, and systems from survey notes, sketches, marked-up prints, and instructions using advanced graphic portrayal techniques, methods, and procedures. Under direction, employees are required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in providing training, guidance, and assistance to subordinates, as well as in performing drafting and related tasks. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through conferences, oral and written reports, observation, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Supervises and participates in the preparation of computer aided engineering designs, maps, structures, and equipment; schedules, assigns, and monitors the preparation of working drawings for such projects as water lines, streets construction, sewer or drainage projects, and right-of-way and easement acquisitions; checks drawings for neatness, clarity, and accurate portrayal of the design; prepares and checks cost and time estimates for sundry projects; prepares drawings of an unusual and extensive nature; provides instruction and training on drafting techniques and records keeping procedures; participates in meetings to discuss projects and construction plans; coordinates utility records data with other agencies; provides technical guidance and assistance to subordinates in resolving problems; collects and interprets engineering data; establishes and maintains filing and records keeping systems.

Applies standard formulas to calculate area, volume, distance, grade, triangulation, evaluations, etc.; performs mathematical calculations to prepare reports, complete work projects.

Recommends such personnel actions as employments, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers required discipline and responds to employee grievances; completes employee performance evaluations.

For Architecture positions: Prepares construction and environmental permit applications, including actually filing, tracking, and resolving issues to facilitate overall construction process; examines general, commercial, industrial, and residential construction site plans to assure conformance to applicable zoning code and regulations; reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, and diagrams to determine proper interface configurations; reviews drawings prepared/submitted by others to identify conflicts with actual field conditions/assure compliance with plans, and specifications; answers requests for information from the public, city, or other agencies.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: symbols, terminology, and accepted standards used in preparing engineering drawings; equipment, facilities, and systems of the particular field of engineering assigned; basic drafting techniques including standardized drawing techniques.

Working knowledge of: charting and graphing procedures and practices; advanced civil drafting techniques; computer assisted drafting systems; legal terminology used in property descriptions.

Some knowledge of: basic training and supervisory techniques; the purpose and objectives of employee performance evaluation; data storage and retrieval systems; the disciplinary and grievance process.

Ability to: prepare unusual nonstandard drawings; read and interpret construction plans, surveying, and engineering data; prepare project cost and time estimates; communicate moderately complex information; work effectively in a group setting; establish and maintain effective working relationships; give constructive criticism; direct the work of others; diagnose training and development needs of subordinates and deliver training programs; perform complex mathematical calculations.

Skill in: the use and care of drafting tools, material, and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of two (2) years of college in engineering drafting or related subjects with five (5) years of experience in drafting and computer-aided design, preferably with some related supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license might be required.


During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
