An employee in this class is responsible for assigning type specifications and for typesetting various kinds of documents produced within the city government. Work is of average difficulty and includes rendering a variety of art services such as layout and paste-up of finished goods in a manner to facilitate printing production. The employee is responsible for proofreading finished materials for accuracy, completeness and appearance. Work is performed under general supervision, requiring exercise of some initiative and independent judgment in determining working techniques and in coordinating assigned activities with other personnel. Employees might be required to make suggestions or recommendations to requesting departments on the best available option for a final printed product; therefore, the exercise of tact and courtesy is expected. Work is reviewed through observation of final product, reports submitted, and feedback from departments as to results obtained.
Screens raw materials for style, format, and compliance with city standards as they relate to publications requirements.
Participates in the coordination of typesetting, proofreading, inclusion of graphics, and type style required for all publications for the City of Tampa.
Designs formats and renders layouts, indicating type style and size, on various job assignments for final approval before preparing mechanical art.
Designs, composes, illustrates, and produces municipal documents and visuals; operates printers, plotters, back-up tape, and other computer peripheral devices in order to facilitate use of computer.
Sets raw materials into an acceptable format utilizing a computer typesetter; participates in the paste-up of typesettings required to provide a professional looking original for final printing; proofs final typeset copy to ensure completeness.
Prepares paste-up of mechanical art for final reproduction; checks art for accuracy, completeness and visual effect.
Performs related work as required.
Working knowledge of: English grammar, composition, and punctuation; publication formats and procedures; the methods, principles, and practices utilized in graphics layout and design; materials, equipment and tools utilized in graphic art.
Some knowledge of: photographic techniques and materials; type styles and sizes; operation and care of computer typesetting equipment; paste-up of materials for final printing.
Ability to: complete complex assignments in an accurate and timely manner; work from layout, rough sketches and oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, departmental representatives, and the general public.
Skill in: the use and care of graphic and photographic tools and equipment; the operation of computer typesetting equipment.
