The Position

The Courier will have the responsibility to pick up and deliver supplies, mail, and equipment for County departments. Incumbents are assigned a specific scheduled route, or have a varied schedule, and may assist with mail service and/or storeroom tasks. 

 

This recruitment is intended to fill the Courier (Extra-Help) position.  Extra-help employees do not have rights to a regular position or continued employment and are excluded from civil service. The hours worked may be part-time or full-time, but hours cannot exceed more than 999 hours in a fiscal year.


Note: All CalPERS retirees applying for Extra Help positions must meet CalPERS post retirement employment requirements. Work must be performed for a limited duration and retiree annuitant may not work more than 960 hours per fiscal year


 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education and/or Experience:

 

High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by two (2) months previous work experience that demonstrates possession of and competency in the requisite knowledge and abilities.


Some of the knowledge and abilities required to perform this role are:


 - Knowledge of local area streets.

 

 - Skill in driving in urban and rural areas in various types of weather and traffic conditions 


 - Ability to read and interpret road maps


 - Lift and move heavy items


 - Plan driving routes to meet delivery schedules


 - Adjust assigned route and schedule to increase efficiency in courier services


 - Prioritize work assignments

Supplemental Information

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver’s license is required.

Extra-help employees who work less than 29 hours per week do not typically receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment. All extra-help employees accrue .034 hours of Paid Time Off.

Selection Process

03/20/2023 -  Deadline to submit application and required documents for next application review.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant’s ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses. Special Requirements

COVID-19 VACCINE REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT

 

The California Department of Public Health (“CDPH”) issued a State Public Health Officer Order (“Order”) on August 5, 2021, addressing the increase California is experiencing in positive COVID-19 cases. The Order requires workers in health care settings to be vaccinated. 

 

The Courier role will be required to enter into the health care and public health lab settings and therefore will be required to show proof of vaccination.

 

For those individuals that may have a religious belief or medical reason that prevents them from taking the vaccine, they must complete and submit their request to the Department of Human Resources well in advance of the first date of employment.
