THE POSITION

Solano County is recruiting to fill our Criminalist Supervisor position in the District Attorney's Forensic Laboratory. The Supervisor assigns, reviews and coordinates the daily operations of the Lab and the work activities of professional, technical, and support staff that conduct forensic laboratory analyses of physical evidence; performs the more complex collection, preservation, and scientific analysis procedures; and testifies in court as an expert witness.

The Criminalist Supervisor reports directly to the Forensic Laboratory Director. 

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur throughout the County.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in chemistry, forensic chemistry/science, biochemistry, toxicology, criminalistics, or a closely related physical or natural science field that included 20 semester / 30 quarter units of general chemistry, organic chemistry (two courses), quantitative techniques, and laboratory sections;

And

Four years of directly related crime laboratory analyst experience in a class comparable to, or higher than, Solano County’s Criminalist (Senior). Experience must have included qualifications as an expert witness in the respective disciplines.

Note: Master’s degree or higher in one of the scientific fields noted above is desirable and may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

 

  • Employees conducting forensic alcohol analyses must be eligible to conduct such work as specified by the State of California at the time of appointment
  • California Driver’s License, Class C
  • May require the successful completion of the annual proficiency testing as required by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB)

The Ideal Candidate:

 

The ideal candidate will have experience in a forensic laboratory in the following areas (any or all):

  • Blood Alcohol Analysis
  • Forensic Toxicology
  • Controlled Substance/Seized Drug Analysis

 

Additionally, the new Supervisor will be assigned the role of Quality Assurance Manager for the Lab. The ideal candidate will have experience with laboratory accreditation utilizing ISO 17025:2017 criteria as well as general forensic laboratory quality assurance experience, including:  

 

  • Internal auditing
  • External Auditing utilizing ISO 17025 criteria
  • Nonconformity resolution
  • Corrective Action
  • Document Control

BENEFITS/ WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

Solano County offers a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. The County contribution for family coverage is $1,671.27 per month for 2022. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage. The County may offer a supplemental contribution for employees enrolled in Employee plus Two or More coverage.  

Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County.   

Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement and contributes to Social Security.

                                  

The County observes 12 full day fixed and 2 half day fixed paid holidays per year. Additionally, employees in this bargaining unit receive 2 floating paid holidays per year.                     

                                                                                                           

Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 3 years. Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year. 

  

Employees are eligible to receive an additional 2.5% longevity pay, per level, after the completion of continuous service at 10, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years.

Extra-help employees who work less than 29 hours per week do not typically receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment. All extra-help employees accrue .034 hours of Paid Time Off for every full hour worked.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule.
